En este momento, el grupo estaba formado por: Roger Waters, guitarra; Clive Metcalf, bajo; Richard Wright, teclados; Nick Mason, bateria; Juliette Gale, voz; y Keith Noble, voz.
Principalmente, "The Abdabs" tocaba temas de rhythm & blues. Después, Juliette se casó con Wright, y ella, Noble, y Metcalf dejaron la banda. Waters trajo a Bob Klose y Syd Barret como guitarristas, seguidos de Chris Dennis como vocalista. Dennis fue llamado al deber por la Royal Air Force y varios meses después, Klose abandonó el grupo, quedando en la banda la formación original de Pink Floyd.


A finales del 65, cambiaron el nombre por el de "The Pink Floyd Sound" y después por "The Pink Floyd" a secas. La creciente popularidad de Pink Floyd, les llevó a editar el sencillo "Arnold Layne", en marzo de 1967. Entraron en el puesto 20 de las listas británicas y el siguiente sencillo, "See Emily Play", se mantuvo en las listas durante 7 semanas, llegando al numero 6. El primer LP, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", también se mantuvo 7 semanas en lista y alcanzó también el sexto puesto.


Debido al cada vez peor estado mental de Syd, el resto de miembros del grupo decidieron buscar un guitarrista adicional para cubrirle; y así, llego a la banda David Gilmour.
