Comprised of rock veteran players, BLACKWULF features Alex Cunningham on vocals, Pete Holmes on guitar, Jesse Rosales on guitar, Scott Peterson on bass, and Dave Pankenier on drums. Drawing from influences found in the darker corners of your stepdad's vinyl collection, the vintage five-piece outfit's electric live performances and headbanging heaviness have converted a wide base of ravenous fans from Los Angeles to London. What distinguishes BLACKWULF from many of their contemporaries is a strong emphasis on "songs" rather than "sounds", delivering a wide slab of listenable vintage-style heavy metal that draws its strengths from imaginative content and quality performance. Founded in 2012 in the San Francisco Bay Area, the band's first vinyl release, "Mind Traveler", was released on Wickerman Records and met with critical acclaim. 2015 saw BLACKWULF aligning with premier California heavy rock label Ripple Music, and releasing their signature second album, "Oblivion Cycle", a riffed-out metal tour de force, whose "serious stoner vibes" were praised by Decibel Magazine. 2018 found the band digging deeper into vintage metal roots, releasing their second Ripple Music vinyl, "Sinister Sides"; the album featured three guest tracks from a fan (and now friend) of the band, Geof O'Keefe, an original founder of PENTAGRAM. BLACKWULF celebrated the release in the Spring of 2018 by performing as a featured artist at Austin's South By Southwest Festival and then again across the pond at Desertfest in London. Fast forward to 2022: BLACKWULF have roared back from the pandemic hiatus with a new Ripple Music album, "Thieves and Liars", due to be released in February of 2023, recorded and produced in Oakland by Jesse Nichols (IGGY & The STOOGES, TY SEGALL, JAMES WILLIAMSON). There are two overall recurring themes. First, is the displacement of the working class and the corruption and greed that has spawned the current climate of popular unrest. Second is the emotional struggle that accompanies a failed relationship and a longing for love, companionship, and a sense of belonging that is seemingly out of reach. Some of the songs were written at various times and were used because they fit the storyline of the album. Dark and Dirty World, Some Things Are Never the Same, Lilly Likes Leanin' on the Piano, and Runnin' into the Fire, were written specifically for the album. Lover of Unreason ended up on the album because the producer of Dark and Dirty World suggested it, I had one of my own songs of a similar style/subject matter that I was going to use but Norma was so excited about it, I went with it and it was the better choice, it book-ends the album perfectly. The album was recorded and produced in Nashville by Dean Miller (son of country music legend Roger Miller), who recalls, "Working with Tommy has been an amazing experience. It's also their finest. Recorded at their own Zebra studios (aka "The Barn") by Cody and Luther's father, legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson, and released on their own label, Songs of the South Records, the album has a warmth and earthiness that suggest comfort in their own skin and surroundings. Most importantly, though, „Hernando" is the first North Mississippi All-Stars record to break out of the blues tribute-band mold and reveal their biggest influences: '70s classic rock, '80s metal, and '90s grunge, the same stuff every pot-smoking teenager in America cut their teeth on. "Eaglebird" grooves like vintage ZZ Top; "Rooster's Blues" redirects Jimmy Page riffs through an Alice in Chains prism; and "Keep the Devil Down" is a bluesy take on late Metallica.
