As first-out-of-the-gate with his 2015 solo album Serious Poke, following the split of NATW, Abbott let loose with the classic rock riffs and infectious hooks that, in hindsight, made his influence apparent on the later NATW material. In the intervening years Abbott has been paying the bills as jobbing producer, writer and session player working with a string of upcoming and established artists including Gabriella Cilmi, Tom Chaplin (Keane), Jamie Lawson, Cassyette, Charlotte OC, Kawala, Megan McKenna and more. Shining Under The Soot finds Abbott returning to the music he loves most. A sound that would ideally have been captured live with a 10-piece band - complete with horn section, backing singers and whirling Leslie cabs, in Muscle Shoals or Sunset Sound - but it was largely recorded piecemeal in a South London windowless basement, below an Eritrean cafe. Despite the practicalities, all the instruments are real - guitars recorded through cranked up valve amps, a Hammond Organ through a roaring Leslie, every drum skin or cymbal hit with sticks. No piano samples or amp sim plugins in sight. Everything pushed air. So why "The Wild Unknown"? With a day job answering to the creative demands of other artists this was a record made for pure pleasure and the only person to please was Abbott himself. Fred demoed the songs with his own vocals. "Listening to the demos I thought "how could this be better?"", says Abbott "What would be more fun? The one thing that could be better is the vocals and I know lots of good singers.." Having absorbed the "History of the Eagles" documentary, Abbott knew that as a band of singers they often all recorded lead vocal on songs and would then pick the best-suited performance for each - a vocal shoot-out. So that's what he did. Steve Llewellyn (Orphan Colours, Ahab), Dave Burn (The Marriage, Ahab), Tom Figgins and Rich Evans all sang lead vocals on every song, in addition to harmonies. Spoiled for choice, Abbott then picked the performance or sound he thought best suited each song. Far from leading to an inconsistent album, the variety ended up adding to the appeal of the record. Despite only singing lead vocals on one track, Fred Abbott's fingerprints are all over this album as producer and multi-instrumentalist, although he did have some help from a team that includes some of the country's top session musicians, Grammy-nominated producer Will Hicks and Grammy-winning mastering engineer Reuben Cohen. As on Serious Poke Abbott is not afraid to wear his love of Petty, Springsteen et al on his sleeve; but this is no pastiche album. It aspires to be a "classic rock" record in the truest sense. Yes, every track has a guitar (or sax) solo, but it's certainly no noodling prog odyssey. The songwriting always comes first - infectious melodic hooks and thoughtful lyrical themes. It was released to retail on February 12, 2008. The lineup for the album is Frank Usher on guitars, Steve Vantsis on bass, Foss Paterson on keyboards, Gavin Griffiths on drums, Dave Haswell on percussion, Lorna Bannon on backing vocals, and new bandmember Chris Johnson on guitars. For the first time, Calum Malcolm (Prefab Sprout, Blue Nile) was brought in to produce the album, and he introduced a more disciplined approach into the recording process. There was also a change with regard to writing the album, as bassist Vantsis was heavily involved for the first time after ten years playing in the band, and his writing brought a slightly different approach. Some of the lyrics of the songs were also influenced by the fact that Fish split with his fiancée, Heather Findlay of the band Mostly Autumn, shortly after the recording of the album had started. 13th Star was written as a concept album, although this applies mainly to the lyrics presenting a narrative throughout -- the concept was of someone on a journey of self- discovery, with the 13th Star serving as the guiding light or the destination. From the first chords of the opening track, "Circle Line," the influence of Vantsis can be heard as the album has a more rocky feel, more akin to Sunsets on Empire than more recent albums. After this fast start, the album slows down on the third track, "Miles de Besos," which is Spanish for "Thousands of Kisses." The fifth track, "Arc of the Curve," was the first single released from the album, but as expected, it did nothing in the charts. After this track, the album picks up the pace again with one of the disc's highlights, "Manchmal." This is a German word for "Sometimes," and the song tells the tale of the turtle and the scorpion. This album was the most commercially successful of the band's career, reaching the top 40 albums in Billboard Magazine. It stands as the culmination of the band's maturity, following the successes of 'In A Glass House' & 'The Power & The Glory'. Having toured Europe & North America non-stop in the years prior to this release with artists like Jethro Tull, Yes, Zappa etc, the band had gone from strength to strength. By the time 'Free Hand' was released Gentle Giant had become a major headliner in their own right. All the members were multi-instrumentalists and the band were never afraid of surprising an audience with a 4 part recorder ensemble followed by a vibraphone solo, all the while rocking the audience and thoroughly enjoying themselves onstage. Gentle Giant albums featured many songs with both literary subjects as well as social and personal commentary on life as rock musicians. 'Free Hand' has more than most. The title of the album and first track were so named as the band had just changed record labels and management and felt unshackled by prior contractual obligations. Putting these issues behind them upon its first release, Gentle Giant embarked on an extensive tour of North America and Europe, plus a short tour of the UK, to promote the album. The incredible range of Gentle Giant's music is evident throughout this album. From the intricate vocal fretwork of 'On Reflection' and the delicate medieval flavour of 'Talybont,' the Celtic-tinged rock of 'Time To Kill' and the jagged rhythms of 'Just The Same,' all those diverse elements which made the band so strikingly original are skillfully blended and perfectly executed. Award winning producer and musician Steven Wilson has added his delicate touch in remixing Free Hand in Dolby Atmos & 5.1 surround sound. His tonal range and painstaking attention to sound quality make 'Free Hand' sound as fresh today as it did on first release. A fitting tribute to the compositional skills and expertise of five dedicated musicians. Steven Wilson's remixed Dolby Atmos and 5.1 surround version of 'Free Hand' is accompanied by custom animated visuals for each track on BluRay.
