No en vano la llamaron The first Lady of song (La primera dama de la canción), y no sólo destacó en el jazz, también su repertorio incluyó swing, blues, bossa nova, samba, gospel, etc.

Es considerada por muchos como una de las cantantes más influyentes e importantes en la historia del jazz.
