The Jackson 5 were long overdue for box set treatment, and this one is well done. All the hits by the group as well as those by Michael and Jermaine Jackson are here (that is, from 1969-1975, the J5's tenure at Motown), along with a representative sampling of album cuts. the J5's albums were afterthoughts to their singles, but some of these songs are nevertheless interesting, whether the group is covering Sly and the Family Stone or Jackson Browne. An entire disc is given over to previously unreleased or rare tracks from the Motown vaults. Taken together, it may be more than all but the most die-hard fan wants to hear, which may be why Motown rushed out yet another single-disc hits collection, The Ultimate Collection, a couple of months later. To accompany this musical came Motown Originals: The Classic Songs That Inspired the Broadway Show!, another repackaging of the songs you know and love: ?Get Ready,? ?Dancing in the Street,? ?Shop Around,? ?My Guy,? ?Where Did Our Love Go,? ?I Want You Back,? etc. There are two versions, one a single disc and one a double, but in either incarnation there are no songs that will surprise because that?s not the intent of this compilation. This is supposed to serve up the biggest and best songs of Motown, and it does. While it is hard to believe that many Motown fans don?t have these? ?tunes somewhere in their collections, it?s also hard to believe that anybody who doesn?t won?t wind up satisfied by this enjoyable collection. The 2-CD version ups the tracks from 14 to 40, making room for artists not represented on the highlights disc such as early hitmaker Barrett Strong (?Money (That?s What I Want)?), The Contours (?Do You Love Me?), The Four Tops (?Baby, I Need Your Loving?), Rick James (?Super Freak?) and The Commodores (?Brick House?). The Temptations? psychedelic soul period gets aired on the 2-CD set (?Ball of Confusion,? ?Cloud Nine?) as well as the post-Ross Supremes era (?Up the Ladder to the Roof?). Each track on the single-disc version is also present on the double-disc edition. As the musical hasn?t begun previews yet, there?s no word on whether the track listing of either edition reflects the actual sequence of the songs in the musical penned by Gordy. ? Although the Moodies started out as your typical English-American blues-rock band (with a lineup that featured future Wings guitarist Denny Laine), they soon found great success on both sides of the Atlantic fusing traditional rock archetypes to classical stylings ? anticipating the psychedelic and progressive trends of the years to come. 1967?s Days of Future Passed was a lauded concept album that also spun off a hit single, ?Nights in White Satin,? a No. 2 hit in America. Subsequent LPs like On the Threshold of a Dream (1969),? ?A Question of Balance (1970) and Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (1971) were also international hits; to this day, even after a brief hiatus in the late 1970s, the band (now a trio, with Days-era members Justin Hayward on lead vocals and guitar, John Lodge on bass and drummer Graeme Edge ? a founding member of the band since 1964?s debut LP The Magnificent Moodies) still records and tours. The first five discs highlight the best of the band in studio, including hits, rarities, outtakes and even tracks from the group?s solo albums in the mid-?70s.
