Es un album creado a partir de tres sesiones; dos en los primeros meses de 1949 y otra posterior en Marzo de 1950. "The Birth of the Cool" (Nacimiento del "Cool") es la primera obra grabada y catalogada de Miles Davis; y es todo un punto de giro dentro de la historia del jazz, y el presagio de una de las más garndes estrellas de la musica.
En estas grabaciones la eslasticidad del bop fue mezclada con la experiencia musical de los musicos, y unos arreglos tranquilos y relajados, hicieron de las sesiones unas especies de reuniones de amigos, en las que reinaba el humor y el buen ambiente; algo que ayudo en gran parte a la complicidad y calidad que se palpa en los temas. Nació un nuevo estilo; el "Cool" lamado así por al espontaneidad y "frescura" de los temas. Es una musica que parece sencilla, peor que tiene muchos recobecos y rincones. Otra de las caracteristicas paar que la llamasen "Cool" (Fresca) es la elegancia con que se mezcla sin llegar a saturar ni ponerse demasiado caliente, y por ese ritmo que parece que pasa de unas lines a otra dando saltos.
Un aspecto notable es que las sesiones suenan muy intimas; y los musicos tocan con tal delicadeza que en ningun momento parece que haya nueve musicos tocando a un mismo tiempo. Las sesiones las sugirió y más tarde produjo Gil Evans. En la banda hay musicos notables como Kai Winding, Gerry Mulligan, Lee Konitz, y Max Roach. Los trabjos del disco son cortos y muy concisos, algo que permite poder poner muchisima más atención en los juegos de los tonos y las consonancias. La virtusiodad de sus creadores hacen que el album sea un conductor de relajacion, a la par que incluso en ciertos moemntos aporta toques de humor; esto a parte de "cool" tambien se definio como West Coast Jazz; debido a la zona en la que se creó. El West Coast Jazz sigue teniendo esa esencia en el tiempo, a pesar de que las corrientes principales del jazz lo han absorbido casi en su totalidad.

Es una de las piezas escritas y producidas por un jovencisimo Gerry Mulligan para Miles Davis. Mulligan, uno de los mejores saxofonistas baritonos del jazz, también formaba parte de la big band de Miles. El compositor a pesar de su juventud exhibe una gran madurez en las partes conuntas, mientras que Davis hace un solo confidente bastante suave pero muy potente. El tema fue más tarde reinterpretado por el propio Mulligan en su tributo a Miles Davis; "The Re-Birth of the Cool", tambien hizo un cover en vivo Mel Torme. Una de las versiones mas excentricas es la del tema es la que hizo Tito Puente, con un estilo totalmente latin jazz. Quizá "Venus de Milo" es la canción de Gerry Mulligan más reconocidas.

Es un tema escrito por Cleo Henry, tambien interpretado por el originalmente; pero la versión más exitosa e inmortal es la de Miles Davis. El titulo nos puede hacer creer que sigue siendo un "masterpiece" del bop; pero no, e la versión de Miles no suena por ninguna de sus partes a bop. Era una canción con una melodia bop y de un ritmo rapido, pero Miles Davis y su banda, la hicieron girar conviritendola en otra pieza más dentro del repertorio cool. Escogieron el tema porque les permitia poder experimentar variando los tonos, alternando los ritmos y tocando d euna forma agresiva; y aun así sonaria bien.

Es otra composicion de Gerry Mulligan, grabada en la primera sesion para el disco de 1949. En esta pieza solo intervienen Miles Davis como tropetista, el saxo alto de Lee Konitz y el propio Mulligan. La vrsión más conocida del tema es la que grabó Gerry Mulligan cuatro años más tarde que esta; paar su versión hizo algunos cambios de orquestación y añadió partes nuevas entre los solos; pero la esencia natural del tema no se perdió. La han tocado otros grandes como Charlie Parker (el cual añadió una seccion de cuerda) en una sesión grabada en vivo, o Elliot Lawrence, el cual siguió los arreglos de Mulligan. Fue otro de los tema que Gerry Mulligan incluyó e su album en honor a Miles Davis, en el año 1992.
