El 24 de mayo de 2006, después de que fuera anunciado Half-Life 2: Episode One, Valve anunció que Episode Two sería lanzado a finales de 2006, y tras sucesivos retrasos, a otoño de 2007. Los dos primeros episodios han sido desarrollados simultáneamente por equipos separados. Se podrá ver a Gordon Freeman y a los otros personajes principales de la serie alejarse tanto de las ruinas de Ciudad 17 como del área entera donde está localizada, por lo que se encontraran en grandes ambientes forestales al aire libre.
