Con mayor frecuencia vemos como artistas — y personas regulares — tienen que buscar tratamiento por dependencia y abuso de medicamentos por receta. Ha trascendido que Gerard Butler ingresó al Centro de Rehabilitación Betty Ford para tratar su adicción a narcóticos para el dolor hace tres semanas y que se espere sea dado de alta en las próximas horas. Se informó que cuando el actor escocés grababa "300", la película que lo hizo famoso, se lastimó la espalda grabando algunas escenas. Entonces desde 2006 comenzó a utilizar los medicamentos. Se presume que el accidente de sur que sufrió en diciembre durante la grabación de "Of Men and Mavericks" sólo sumó a su dependencia. Se informó que Butler ingresó a rehabilitación por voluntad propia.
El actor de 42 años tuvo problemas con la cocaína y el alcohol en el pasado, lo que podría ser una mezcla fatal con los narcóticos.
