Debra Stephenson is an English actress born in New Zealand on June 4, 1972. She then moved to Hull, England when she was young, and it is where she spent her growing up years. She made her debut on television at the age of 14 when she appeared on the television show Opportunity Knocks, where she made it to the show's All Winners' Final which was held live at the London Palladium. She then became one of British TV's hottest faces when she joined the cast of the comedy drama Playing the Field in 1998, a series about women's football.

In 1999, Debra Stephenson's acting prowess went on full bloom as she played the role of Shell Dockley on ITV's prison Drama, Bad Girls. Her performance of the psychotic character led her to two consecutive nominations for Best Actress at the National Television Awards in 1999 and 2000. She was one of the show's most popular characters, playing the role for three years and then returned for a brief stay in 2003.

Debra Stephenson has played various kinds of roles both on radio and television. She also enjoyed being active in stand-up comedy, where she performed at London's Comedy Store. As a comedy actress, Debra Stephenson appeared on BBC Radio 4's At Home with the Snails and TV to go with Hugh Dennis and Pauline McLynn. She as well became an important part of the Friday Night Project, wherein she became an interviewer who sometimes went undercover.

In 2004, Debra Stephenson took on the lead role of the popular British soap opera, Coronation Street. She garnered several nominations for Best Newcomer in many TV and Soap Awards. In 2006, the show's producers announced that she will be leaving she show for she will be moving to Southern England with her family. Meanwhile in 2005, Debra Stephenson became part of Comic Relief does Fame Academy, a celebrity singing contest whose profits would go to charity. She finished fifth place in the competition, and was noted for her rendition of the song Cry Me a River and Dionne Warwick's Anyone Who Had a Heart. Her involvement in the show led to her launch as a singer and released a debut album entitled In the Sunshine.

Debra Stephenson is married to builder James Duffield and they have two children, Max and Zoe Louise.
