Medellín, Colombia

• The city has seen great advancement in public transportation, with more than 500,000 residents and visitors using its Metro train system each day. The city also boasts a public bike-share program.
• The Metro system reduces Medellin’s CO2 emissions by 175,000 tons each year.
• In 2011 Medellin opened a large outdoor escalator, allowing residents of the city’s elevated Comuna 13 neighborhood to safely ride down the steep hillside, the size of a 28-story building.
• New facilities and landmarks include the España Library and a cultural center in Moravia.
• The city’s crime rate has fallen significantly in recent decades, thanks to aggressive local policies.
• The city’s public utilities company, Empresas Publicas de Medellin, have helped to support community goals and public goals, such as improving education.
