Sherlock Holmes siempre ha sido el más listo de todos? hasta ahora. Y es que hay una nueva mente maestra del crimen suelta, el profesor Moriarty (Jared Harris), quien no sólo está a la altura intelectual de Holmes, sino que posee también una capacidad para el mal, combinada con una absoluta falta de escrúpulos, que bien podrían darle una ventaja sobre el afamado investigador.
La investigación se torna aún más peligrosa cuando lleva a Holmes y Watson a recorrer el continente desde Inglaterra hasta Francia y posteriormente a Alemania para terminar finalmente en Suiza. Pero el astuto Moriarty siempre va un paso por delante y va tejiendo una red de muertes y destrucción, todo ello dentro de un plan más grande que, de tener éxito, cambiará el curso de la historia.
