Juan, un niño de siete años, vive en un barrio humilde de Madrid y tiene una imaginación desbordante. Por las noches, sufre pesadillas en las que un intruso sin rostro lo ataca salvajemente, sin que su madre pueda hacer nada para evitarlo. Mientras tanto, Mia, una adolescente londinense de doce años, lee a sus compañeros de clase el misterioso cuento de Carahueca, un monstruo obsesionado con los niños. Ese mismo día, John Farrow, su padre, sufre un accidente en el rascacielos en construcción donde trabaja. La vida de las dos familias, aunque separadas por muchos kilómetros, dará un vuelco: los intrusos ya se han instalado en sus casas e intentan desesperadamente arrebatarles algo a los niños.
