En 1979 se da el cierre por parte de la fuerza aérea del Área 51. Todo el material almacenado es transportado a Ohio en tren, cuando un camión se salta las barreras y choca contra el tren provocando que este descarrile y una gran explosión. Pero el material almacenado oculta un secreto... Pese a tratar sobre extraterrestres, "Super 8" -producida por Spielberg- no tiene ninguna relación con el anterior proyecto de Abrams, "Cloverfield".
