Sinópsis:

La joven australiana de 11 años Kirra (Bindi Irwin) se ve obligada a pasar una temporada con su abuelo (Beau Bridges) en Sudáfrica. Una noche su abuelo encuentra a un ejemplar de orca atrapada en medio de una tempestad y decide capturarlo. A partir de ese momento empieza a nacer una gran amistad entre la niña y el animal, al que llama Willy. La orca crece y resulta imposible seguir cuidándola, la única solución posible es vender a Willy a un postor sin escrúpulos que sólo quiere hacer dinero encerrando a la orca en un parque temático. Kirra, aterrada, decide impedir esto intentando que su amiguito pueda vivir libre en el océano buscando a su verdadera familia.
