CENTRALIA
Centralia es un municipio en el condado de Columbia, Pennsylvania, en los Estados Unidos. A pesar de que recientemente en 1981 había más de 1.000 habitantes, la población disminuyó a 12 como resultado de una vieja mina en llamas, que arde debajo de la ciudad.

El pueblo fue registrado en 1866, pero ya existía desde 1841; el poblado fue cuna de activistas de la organización secreta de mineros llamada Molly Maguires, durante el período entre 1860 y 1870. El fundador de la ciudad, Alexander Rea, fue una de las víctimas de esta orden clandestina, cuando fue asesinado en las afueras del municipio el 17 de Octubre de 1868. Otros asesinatos e incendios ocurrieron en aquel tiempo.
En el año 1962, un incendio aparentemente inofensivo en un basurero de Centralia (Pensilvania) se extendió repentinamente por el subsuelo y encendió una veta de carbón situada bajo la ciudad. Las llamas de la superficie fueron extinguidas por los bomberos, pero el carbón siguió ardiendo bajo las casas hasta convertirse en un monstruo incontrolable que obligó a desalojar la ciudad.
Hoy día, Centralia es un lugar abandonado y fantasmal. La mina subterránea sigue ardiendo y se calcula que contiene carbón para hacerlo durante 250 años más.
El aspecto actual de Centralia es lo más parecido a una película de terror. De hecho, el lugar sirvió de inspiración para la película “Silent Hill”. Aquí y allá, el monstruo ha levantado las calles o partido en dos las carreteras; pequeñas columnas de humo delatan los lugares por los que trata de respirar.
