Guerra de las Malvinas

Antecedentes

El archipiélago de las Malvinas fue descubierto en 1520 por Fernando de Magallanes. Tras pasar por manos españolas, francesas y argentinas, en 1833 fueron invadidas por los ingleses. Desde entonces la soberanía del archipiélago ha sido foco de tensiones diplomáticas entre el Reino Unido y Argentina.

Quince días antes del inicio de la guerra, un grupo de obreros argentinos desembarcó e izó su bandera en Georgia del Sur, isla cercana a las Malvinas y también bajo soberanía británica. Los ingleses amenazaron con expulsarlos.


Estallido de la Guerra de las Malvinas

El dia 2 de abril de 1982 el Ejército argentino invadió el archipiélago de la Malvinas. Ese mismo día el Reino Unido puso en alerta a sus tropas y el Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU se reunió para tratar el tema.

Argentina, gobernada por Leopoldo Galtieri, anunció que las islas Malvinas, Georgias y Sandwich del Sur quedan bajo su soberanía. Ese mismo día el Reino Unido rompió relaciones diplomáticas con Argentina y anunció el envío de tropas. Durante la guerra, el Perú envió aviones y armas para ayudar a Argentina; mientras que Chile apoyó a Inglaterra.


Hechos principales de la Guerra de las Malvinas

El 5 de abril las tropas británicas partieron hacia las Malvinas desde Portsmouth y Plymouth. El 1 y 2 de mayo atacaron por mar y aire Puerto Argentino y Puerto Darwin. El 6 de mayo murieron 323 marineros del buque argentino General Belgrano, hundido por el submarino atómico Conqueror.

El 6 de mayo la ONU propuso el retiro de las fuerzas de ambos países y la administración de las islas por parte de las Naciones Unidas mientras duren las negociaciones. El Gobierno de Margaret Tatcher rechazó el plan.

El 12 de mayo partieron desde Southampton, a bordo del transatlántico Queen Elizabeth, 3000 soldados británicos, entre ellos un regimiento de 'gurkas'. En los días posteriores se intensificaron los combates. El 1 de junio el Ejército británico tomó el Monte Kent, a 20 kilómetros de Puerto Argentino. Sucesivas victorias permitieron a los ingleses ocupar las posiciones argentinas.

Alto al fuego y capitulación

El 14 de junio los generales Jeremy Moore (comandante británico) y Mario Menéndez (Gobernador militar de las islas) firmaron el alto el fuego y la capitulación argentina. En Buenos Aires hubo manifestaciones contra la rendición que terminaron con graves enfrentamientos.

Durante los 74 días que duró la guerra murieron más de 600 argentinos y cerca de 300 británicos.
