Gainax (ガイナックス, Gainax?) es un estudio de anime japonés conocido generalmente por su gran obra Neon Genesis Evangelion, aunque también otros mangas/animes modernos que han salido de su mano son: FLCL (Furi Kuri) y Karekano, entre otros.
El estudio Gainax fue formado a principios de los años 1980 por los universitarios Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Takami Akai y Shinji Higuchi bajo el nombre de Daicon Film. Su primer proyecto fue la producción de un corto animado de 5 minutos para la XX Convención Anual Nacional Japonesa de Ciencia Ficción, también conocido como Daicon III, y que se celebró en 1981 en Osaka (Japón). El corto trata sobre una niña que lucha contra toda clase de monstruos, robots y naves espaciales de las series televisivas de ciencia-ficción producidas hasta entonces (Ultraman, Star Trek, La Guerra de las Galaxias y Godzilla, entre muchas otras) hasta que llega a una llanura desértica y vierte un vaso de agua sobre un rábano daikon, que crece inmediatamente hasta convertirse en una nave espacial gigantesca, en la cual se monta. Aunque este corto animado fue ambicioso, la calidad de la animación fue mediocre.
Gainax caló mucho más hondo en la XXII Convención Anual Nacional Japonesa de Ciencia Ficción, Daicon IV, en 1983. En esta ocasión, el corto era una recapitulación del corto original aunque con una mejor calidad de animación; tras lo cual mostró a la protagonista ya adulta, llevando un vestido de conejita de Playboy y luchando contra una aún mayor variedad de criaturas de toda clase de películas y novelas del género mientras navega por el cielo montada sobre la espada Stormbringer. La música de acompañamiento era la canción Twilight del grupo Electric Light Orchestra. Este corto estableció Daicon Film como un nuevo estudio de anime con talento. El estudio cambió su nombre a Gainax en 1985.

El Estudio Ghibli (スタジオジブリ, Sutajio Jiburi?) es un estudio japonés de animación. Sus películas de anime han sido provocativas, imaginativas, emotivas y extensamente elogiadas por todo el mundo.
Su nombre deriva del apodo que los italianos usan para sus aviones de exploración del Sahara en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el cual deriva de la palabra italiana usada para el viento caliente que sopla en el desierto del Sahara. Aunque el nombre es del italiano, la pronunciación cuando se refiere al Estudio es 'ji-bree' o 'ji-bu-ri', para adaptarse a la fonética de la lengua japonesa. La teoría detrás del nombre era que ellos estaban "soplando" un nuevo viento en la industria del anime.
Fundado en 1985, está dirigido por el altamente galardonado director Hayao Miyazaki (宮崎 駿 Miyazaki Hayao) junto a su colega y mentor Isao Takahata. Sus orígenes datan de 1983, con la película Nausicaä del Valle del Viento (風の谷のナウシカ Kaze no tani no Naushika, 1984), que empezó como un manga en una publicación de la revista Tokuma Shoten (徳間書店). Tokuma era la compañía "madre" del Estudio Ghibli, y cedió a Disney los derechos de video y distribución de varias películas; entre ellas La Princesa Mononoke (もののけ姫 Mononoke Hime, 1997) y El Viaje de Chihiro (千と千尋の神隠し Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, 2001). El compositor Joe Hisaishi ha creado la banda sonora para muchas de las películas del Estudio Ghibli.
Debido a la fama de los estudios se abrió en las afueras de Tokio el Museo Ghibli.
La más famosa y alabada película del Estudio que no fue dirigida por Miyazaki es La tumba de las luciérnagas (火垂の墓 Hotaru no Haka, 1988), dirigida por Isao Takahata, una triste película centrada en las vidas de 2 huérfanos a finales de la Segunda Guerra Mundial en Japón.
