Cuando Beth Emhoff regresa de un viaje de negocios en Hong Kong, tiene síntomas que ella atribuye al jet-lag. Dos días después, muere y los doctores le dicen a su desconsolado esposo que no tienen idea de la causa. Pronto, otros sufren los mismos síntomas misteriosos con el mismo descenlance. En Minneapolis, Chicago, Londres, París, Tokio y Hong Kong un caso se convierte en cuatro, luego en dieciséis, y luego en cientos o miles a medida que el contagio pasa todas las fronteras, impulsado por las innumerables interacciones humanas que hay día tras día.
