Su nombre -Wu Tang- es el mismo que el de una espada de kung-fu legendaria, primer indicio de un extraordinario gusto por las artes marciales y el orientalismo que salpica todo su corpus musical. El líder y aglutinante de todos estos guerreros urbanos es RZA, el verdadero artífice del sonido del Clan, porque es él quien fabrica las texturas crudas, los samples minimalistas, los beats ferruginosos y la musculatura inteligente de las composiciones, lo cual ha sugerido una cierta comparación con Thelonius Monk que, para ser sinceros, no le viene grande en absoluto. El Wu Tang Clan posee uno de los sonidos más característicos y originales del rap.
En el año 2000, tras el embriagador pero excesivamente extenso Wu Tang Forever, llega The W con sus bases soul, como mariposas atrapadas bajo una capa de hielo reluciendo bajo la tormenta de mc's rabiosos y sus beats ceñudos. Las colaboraciones estelares de Junior Reid - One Blood Under W, Nas -Let My Niggas Live-, Isaac Hayes -I Can't Go To Sleep-, Busta Rhymes -The Monument- insuflan al disco de una heterogeneidad muy positiva para recorrer las trece pistas sin desfallecer. La formación es similar a la primigenia salvo que sale Old Dirty Bastard (R.I.P desde noviembre de 2004) y entra Cappadonna.
