Joaquín Alberto Vargas y Chávez (Arequipa (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arequipa), Perú (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Per%C3%BA), 9 de febrero (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/9_de_febrero) de 1896 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/1896) - 30 de diciembre (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/30_de_diciembre) de 1982 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982)) fue uno de los más connotados pintores (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pintor) de modelos pin-up (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin-up). A los 16 años se mudó a los Estados Unidos en 1916, luego de estudiar Arte (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estudio_de_la_Historia_del_Arte) en Europa antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primera_Guerra_Mundial).
En los inicios de su carrera, trabajó como artista para las revistas musicales (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revista_%28g%C3%A9nero%29) Ziegfeld Follies (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziegfeld_Follies) y para diversos estudios de Hollywood. Adquirió fama en los años 1940 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%C3%B1os_1940) al crear las imágenes estilo pin-up para la revista Esquire (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esquire). Estas pinturas, también conocidas como Varga Girls ('Chicas Varga'), fueron adaptadas para adornar el fuselaje (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuselaje) de muchos aviones de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segunda_Guerra_Mundial).
Una batalla legal con Esquire sobre la utilización del nombre «Varga» terminó en un juicio contra él, provocándole problemas financieros hasta la década de 1960, cuando la revista Playboy (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Playboy) comenzó a usar sus pinturas como las «Varga Girls». Su carrera floreció y realizó importantes exhibiciones de su obra alrededor del mundo.
