En 1966 comenzó a trabajar como diseñador de interiores. A partir de 1968 Giger se dedicó exclusivamente al arte y sus primeras obras fueron publicadas hacia 1969 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969), participando también en la parte artística de algún cortometraje, como Swissmade - 2068 (Fredi M. Muller, 1969). Durante esa época mantuvo una relación con la artista Li Tobler (http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Li_Tobler&action=edit&redlink=1), con quien que grabaría varios cortos. El suicidio de su amada en 1975 marcó para siempre la obra de Giger.
Conocido entre el gran público por diseñar y desarrollar junto a Carlo Rambaldi (http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carlo_Rambaldi&action=edit&redlink=1) la criatura y algunos escenarios de la película Alien, el octavo pasajero (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien,_el_octavo_pasajero) de Ridley Scott (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ridley_Scott) (1979, basándose en sus propias obras pictóricas anteriores, como "Necronom V") por la que le concedieron en 1980 el Oscar (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premios_%C3%93scar) al mejor diseño de escenarios.
En el ámbito cinegratográfico también se encargó del diseño del lado oscuro de Poltergeist II (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poltergeist_II) (Brian Gibson, 1986), quedando bastante desilusionado del tratamiento que se le dio en la película a sus diseños.1 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._R._Giger#cite_note-0) Posteriormente colaboró secundariamente y tras prestarse voluntario, en los diseños de Alien 3 (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_3) (David Fincher (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Fincher), 1992), ya que James Cameron (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Cameron) rechazó su participación para los diseños de Aliens, el regreso (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliens,_el_regreso) (1986). También participó en la parte estética de otras películas, como Species (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Species_%28pel%C3%ADcula%29) (Roger Donaldson (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Donaldson), 1995) siendo sus trabajos usados en las portadas de muchos libros y discos. Asimismo, ha realizado trabajos para videojuegos como Dark Seed (http://es.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dark_Seed&action=edit&redlink=1) (1992) y Dark Seed II (1995), aventuras gráficas de ambientación lovecraftiana (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovecraft).

Dicen que en el arte uno debe decir lo primero que le viene a la mente y, en este caso, me parece un arte alienígena.

Ese que se realiza después de pasar miles de años metido en una nave nodriza, en busca del Planeta Azul, del que se habla en todos los confines del universo, dotado de los más bellos colores y las más feroces especies.

Como en una nave espacial no se puede imaginar el verdor de un pastizal, el rosa de los delfines del Amazonas o el rojo de la Rosa de Jamaica, se reemplazan por los grises de los tubos, las mangueras, dispensadores de aire y el Salón del Consejo Supremo:

Salvo cuando se trate de hacerle un retrato a la reina madre de la colmena interestelar, pero eso sólo sucede cada año luz de recorrido:
