Corre el año 1215. El rey Juan I de Inglaterra (Paul Giamatti) se ha visto obligado a firmar la Carta Magna. Furioso, recluta un despiadado ejército de mercenarios que empieza a arrasar el país para restaurar la monarquía absoluta. Tan solo un grupo de caballeros reunidos por el barón Albany (Brian Cox) y atrincherados en el castillo de Rochester se interpone entre él y la victoria. Junto a ellos, Marshall (James Purefoy), un caballero templario atormentado por la culpa ante las atrocidades que cometió durante las cruzadas, y unos mercenarios entre los que se encuentran Beckett (Jason Flemyng) y el joven Guy (Aneurin Barnard). En medio de la batalla, Marshall deberá lidiar además con sus florecientes sentimientos hacia Isabel (Kate Mara), la hermosa señora del castillo y esposa de Reginald de Cornhill (Derek Jacobi).
