John Curtis Holmes nació el 8 de agosto de 1944 en el condado de Pickway (Ohio), fruto de la explosiva combinación de un padre carpintero y alcohólico y una madre bautista, permanentemente aferrada a las manoseadas páginas de la sagrada Biblia. Si la beata mujer hubiera intuido por un instante en lo que acabaría convirtiéndose su retoño, a buen seguro habría dudado de la bondad del Señor.
John era el pequeño de tres chicos y una niña y mostró su precocidad -y procacidad- con envidiable celeridad: perdió su virginidad a la temprana edad de 12 años con una amiga de su madre que contaba 36 años de edad.
El crecer en el seno de una familia económicamente deprimida le obligó a independizarse a los 16 años. ¿Y qué mejor forma de emancipación que enrolarse en el glorioso ejército americano? Cuenta la leyenda que mientras servía a la patria en Berlín, sus compañeros de acuartelamiento llegaron a pagarle para ver de cerca su sobrecogedor apéndice
A su regreso a casa en 1964 Holmes se costeó una carrera como profesor de educación física en la universidad de UCLA conduciendo ambulancias y gracias a otra ocupación algo menos honorable: bailando stripteases en clubs nocturnos. Sin intuirlo de forma consciente, lo cierto es que se había iniciado ya en los primeros aledaños del porno. Su peculiar Pigmalion fue un fotógrafo profesional al que conoció oportunamente en su despacho ubicado en los lavabos de un salón de póquer de Gardina y que le embaucó para que se dejara fotografiar para revistas en poses insinuantes.
En 1965, a los 21 años de edad, John se casó con Sharon Gebenini, una enfermera del hospital general del condado y la pareja se instaló en un apartamento en Glendale.
Probablemente lo que hacia emocionante este matrimonio es que ella no sabía absolutamente nada de la doble vida de su marido. No fue hasta una tarde del verano de 1969 cuando John decidió confesarle la verdad con estas proféticas palabras: "Tengo que decirte que he estado haciendo otra cosa y creo que voy a convertirlo en el oficio de mi vida".
Muy joven e insultantemente libidinoso, entre visita y visita a la comisaría (otro augurio de su final), Holmes siguió compaginando sus performances en directo en infames garitos ilegales con su participación en un número indeterminado de cortometrajes bastante osados para la época (lo que en la jerga profesional se llamaban "loops" -en 16 mm.- o "stag movies" -en Super 8-. Contenían un único plano secuencia de 10 a 15 minutos de duración de acción sexual sin argumento), la mayoría de ellos facturados para el sello Ambassador y dirigidos a la venta directa. Algunas informaciones aseguran que en los duros inicios de su tórrida filmografía no dudó en redondear sus menguados ingresos interviniendo en algún que otro film gay, extremo este no confirmado.
En lo privado Holmes y Sharon establecieron un peculiar pacto de convivencia: ella -que regentaba un complejo de apartamentos- pagaba la comida y los gastos de mantenimiento de la casa, se ocupaba de las tareas del hogar y de cocinar para él. Por su parte Holmes se guardaba la pasta ganada con su entrepierna y se la fundía por su cuenta... Un acuerdo ciertamente nada equitativo que da la medida de la personalidad egoísta y despreocupada que siempre le distinguió.
1970 supone el feliz año de la legalización de la pornografía. Algo comparable al final de la Ley Seca. Holmes se introducirá en engranajes industriales más enjundiosos a través de la compañía independiente Flaming Productions. Resulta complicado situar sus inicios profesionales tras el levantamiento de la veda, pero todo indica que su debut en un largometraje tras la etapa clandestina se fecha en 1973 en el film Teenage Cowgirls, donde figura acreditado como Long John Wadd. Holmes interpreta a Río, un atracador de bancos al estilo Robin Hood que galopa acompañado de un petimetre inglés cuando no cabalga a lomos de Amanda Blake, Jane Wenstein o Sally Whiters. Ambos son perseguidos por un cazador de recompensas que va tras sus pellejos y el oro que han robado de un banco. El film concluye con el ya ritual duelo a muerte -un explícito guiño a Solo Ante El Peligro- en el que Río tirotea a su rival, que emplea a su chica como escudo humano.
Según establece una fuente de toda solvencia como es el reputado erotómano Robert H. Rimmer, el colgajo de Mr. Holmes en estado de flaccidez tenla exactamente una longitud de 13 pulgadas y media. Unas dimensiones que en muchas ocasiones impedían que su miembro apenas pasara a un estado vagamente erecto y obligaba a Holmes a sujetárselo con ambas manos para poder encauzarlo correctamente hacia la codiciada diana. Además Holmes no había sido circuncidado, muy rara excepción entre la parroquia de actores porno de aquellos días, lo cual propiciaria ocurrentes anécdotas en títulos como Sweet Punkin', I Love You ('75) de Robert Norman.
A mediados de la década de los '70 John Holmes ya se había convertido en el nº 1 indiscutible, lo que aconsejaría la realización de su primer retrato fílmico, titulado Las Orgías De John Holmes ('75) de Donald U. Cunard, un tour sexual que parte de su casa en San Francisco y tiene paradas calientes en Las Vegas, New York, Londres, París y Roma y en el que un Holmes pletórico se muestra absolutamente desafiante respecto a sus capacidades amatorias: "Soy una de las maravillas del mundo. Tengo la polla más grande del mundo y la he utilizado desde que tenía siete años de edad. Ha estado dentro de 10.000 mujeres, por lo menos, y ninguna de ellas ha quedado insatisfecha. Mi polla es una responsabilidad y debo emplearla. Afortunadamente puedo follar cuatro o cinco horas al día, pero aun espero a esa mujer especial que pueda hacer desaparecer mi polla en su boca, coño o culo".

John Holmes alcanzará su cenit profesional cuando el tándem formado por el realizador Bob Chinn y el productor Damon Christian (aka Richard Aldrich quien, como Alfred Hitchcock, siempre aparecía en sus films en un breve papel) diseñaron especialmente para él el personaje del peludo detective Johnny Wadd, genuino paradigma estético de los '70.
Entre los títulos más destacables cabe citar Tapiz De Pasiones que documenta el enfrentamiento entre el calenturiento sabueso y la Viuda Negra; Tell Them Johnny Wadd Is Here ('76) en la que combate el narcotráfico desde la frontera mexicana mientras se beneficia a Annette Haven, Felicia Sanna y Veronica Taylor; Liquid Lips ('76) donde es empleado por el FBI para desmantelar a los narcotraficantes mexicanos en Frisco y aun tiene tiempo para dejar exhausta a Monique Starr; Jade Pussycat ('77) que contiene divertidos ecos de El Halcón Maltés en la búsqueda que Johnny y Georgina Spelvin emprenden de una valiosa piedra preciosa robada de un museo de Tokio; su secuela, China Cat ('78 )donde Johnny se alía con las Charlie's Devils (una parodia a costa de las televisivas Ángeles De Charlie) o Blonde Fire ('79) en la que el siempre dispuesto investigador recupera un millonario diamante sudafricano del interior de la jugosa vagina de Seka. ¿O era Jesie St. James?
Hacia finales de los '70 el refulgente brillo de la estrella Holmes empezaba a declinar a pasos agigantados. Últimamente su principal patrimonio tenia problemas de turgencia.
Esnifaba una raya de cocaína cada 10 o 15 minutos y engullía de 40 a 50 pastillas de Valium diarias para contrarrestar el efecto. Y obviamente eso afectaba a su pene: simplemente no se le levantaba. Tal situación acabó repercutiendo muy negativamente en los rodajes, que se veían constantemente interrumpidos por la inhibición provocada por los estupefacientes.
Divorciado de Sharon, Holmes vivía con su amante en la caravana del Chevrolet Malibu de su ex-mujer. La chica -hija de un matrimonio divorciado de Miami y a la que conoció en 1976 cuando era una inquilina adolescente del complejo de apartamentos que regentaba Sharon- se prostituía para que John pudiera costearse su hábito.
"Hacia 1978 Holmes se pasaba todo el tiempo fumando cocaína. Se había metido en la droga durante el rodaje de una película en Las Vegas y desde entonces no dejó de fumar. Ya no iba nunca a ninguna parte sin su maletín Samsonite marrón. Dentro llevaba las drogas, su pipa de vidrio, el bicarbonato y un platillo para hervir el polvo de la cocaína hasta convertirlo en una piedra, una botella de ron 151 y bolitas de algodón para encender la pipa".

Los años '80 fueron una época devastadora para John Holmes. Quizá no en lo profesional, pero sí en lo personal.
El 10 de julio del '81 Holmes, su amante y Sharon fueros arrestados por la policía de L.A. y tras permanecer durante tres días bajo custodia policial fueron liberados sin cargos.
Holmes y su amante huyeron a Miami pero allí fueron detenidos de nuevo. Holmes, Eddie Nash y su guardaespaldas Gregory DeWitt Diles -un personaje que hubiera hecho las delicias del mismísimo Hunter S. Thompson: un metro noventa y tres y 135 kilos de criminal convicto y experto en kárate- fueron acusados del brutal asesinato de La Banda De Wonderland.
Según declaraciones del propio Holmes, Nash le obligó a conducir a tres de sus matones a la casa de la avenida Wonderland donde asesinaron salvajemente a cuatro personas a golpes como venganza por un robo que la banda había cometido unos días antes en la fortaleza de Nash. El múltiple asesinato fue tan brutal que la policía no dudó en comparar el caso con los crímenes rituales de Tate-Labianca cometidos por la familia Manson.

A principios de 1983, Holmes estaba rodando la película Flesh Pond de Troy Benny en un estudio de Frisco cuando conoció a una de las actrices del film. Era Laurie Rose. Tenía 19 años y provenía de un pequeño pueblo de los alrededores de Las Vegas. En la galaxia estelar del porno se la promocionaba pomposamente como Misty Dawn, La Reina Anal Del Porno. Fue ella quien se convirtió en su segunda mujer.
John se alejó de las drogas por influencia de Laurie. Se quedaban mucho en casa y veían videos. Los fines de semana frecuentaban encuentros de intercambios de parejas y subastas. Hasta que en el verano de 1985, John dio positivo en el análisis del sida...
"Cuando volvió se reía de aquello. Cerramos la oficina y nos fuimos a la playa. Tocamos nuestras canciones favoritas, paseamos y hablamos. John me dijo que le parecía como si le hubiesen elegido para coger el sida por ser quien era, por cómo vivía. Se sentía como si fuera un ejemplo".

Pero sus preocupaciones se remediaron definitivamente el 13 de marzo de 1988 en un hospital de Sepúlveda (California). Sólo tenía 43 años de edad. La versión oficial atribuye la causa de su muerte a un cáncer de colon, pero en las mentideros de Hollywood la palabra "sida" corría de boca en boca. Un rumor que las últimas fotografías del actor (reproducidas incluso en publicaciones rosa como Hola!) parecen ciertamente certificar.
Pese a ello estos rumores nunca han sido confirmados. Es, simplemente, una verdad tácita. Su cuerpo fue incinerado, las cenizas esparcidas en el océano y la empañada leyenda de John Holmes pudo ingresar definitivamente en el panteón del star-system genital.

Sus últimas y agónicas películas fueron la coprodución italoamericana Cicciolina Number 1 ('86) de Riccardo Schicchi, donde un demacradísimo Holmes hace el amor con la por entonces polémica pornodiputada y una timorata Amber Lynn; Fiebre Del Viernes Noche ('86) de Charles De Santos, en compañía de Janney Robins o Lili Marlene, que fue estrenada póstumamente y The Devil And Mr. Holmes ('87), donde formó pareja con una de las grandes estrellas europeas, Karin Schubert. Añadir también Let Me Count The Lays ('88 )que contiene la primera y única entrevista con John Holmes, hasta ese momento inédita.
La suya fue sin duda una muerte simbólica, pues certificó también el ocaso de toda una época y de una concepción del negocio del porno más libre, simple e ingenua. En una industria donde las estrellas femeninas -salvo honrosas excepciones- deben exprimir al máximo su físico en una exigua carrera contra el tiempo, John Holmes se convirtió en un excepcional corredor de fondo. Desapareció poniendo fin a una carrera que se prolongó por espacio de más de veinte años de intensa dedicación -la más larga y prolífica de la historia de la pornografía mundial- y en la que aseguraba haber protagonizado un total de 2.274 "trabajos" ante las cámaras en los que folló con dos generaciones de intérpretes femeninas, incluyendo las más curtidas veteranas.
