El estallido del volcán Grimsvotn es el más potente desde 1873 - más fuerte que el volcán Eyjafjallajokull que causó problemas el año pasado - pero no puede causar el mismo grado de agitación. Los científicos dicen que el tipo de ceniza que arrojó se dispersa menos fácilmente y los vientos hasta la fecha han sido más favorables que durante la explosión del año pasado.
