El Museo de Madame Tussauds es el museo de cera más conocido en el mundo. Posee la colección más grande de figuras de celebridades. La sede central del museo está en Londres, pero también hay establecimientos en Nueva York, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Ámsterdam, Washington, Berlín y Victoria.

Marie Tussauds (1761-1850), quien al nacer recibió el nombre Marie Grosholtz (Estrasburgo, Francia), trabajó como ama de llaves para el doctor Philippe Curtius, médico experto en modelismo en cera, arte que le enseñó. En 1765, Curtius hizo una escultura de cera de Marie-Jeanne du Barry, la amante del rey Luis XV. Un molde de aquella escultura es el trabajo más antiguo de los que actualmente se exhiben. Se realizó la primera exposición de las figuras de cera de Curtius en 1770, lo que atrajo a una gran audiencia. La exposición se llevó al Palacio Real en París, en 1776.

También modeló los rostros de Marat, de Luis XVI y de Robespierre, entre otros guillotinados, actualmente expuestos en la sección llamada "Cámara de los Horrores" del Museo Tussaud.

Se casó con el ingeniero François Tussaud, de donde heredó el apellido de casada. Realizó la primera exposición permanente en 1835 en Baker Street, Londres, donde se expusieron figuras que fueron víctimas de la guillotina.
