El fotógrafo neoyorkino Peter Beste ha documentado durante los últimos siete años la escena black metal que se cuece en Noruega. El resultado es altamente interesante teniendo en cuenta que este movimiento escandinavo lucha por mantenerse oculto en el underground. Las fotos han podido verse expuestas en galerías y desde el pasado 15 de mayo publicadas en un volumen bajo el título de True Norwegian Black Metal (Vice Books). Una antología de 216 páginas que recoge su larga inmersión periodística en la profundidades de lo oscuro.


Artistas como Varg Vikernes — único miembro de Burzum — declaran que el black metal también ha sucumbido a la comercialidad que alcanzó anteriormente su antecesor, el death metal. No obstante la llama de su marginalidad se mantiene encendida, aunque se hayan apaciguado la quema de iglesias así como los asesinatos, suicidios y otros violentos escándalos que tanta fama aportaron a este polémico movimiento musical ligado al nacionalismo escandinavo, al satanismo, a la religión pagana y al consecuente Inner Circle. Sin ir más lejos en la pasada edición de The Wire 297, Edwin Poncey explicaba como sus seguidores siguen utilizado el cassette para hacer circular su música. Mientras hoy día la gente suele utilizar iPods y demás, ellos han elegido un formato casi extinguido porque eso les permite limitar su difusión a un circulo de incondicionales.

Aun así el fotógrafo ha conseguido ganarse la confianza de inmundos personajes como el polémico Gaahl del grupo Gorgoroth, encarcelado en el 2001 por torturar a un hombre durante varias horas. Gracias a eso ha podido capturar unas fotografías sin precedentes y de gran artisticidad.
