Los inicios de la banda fueron por el año 1983 en Harrisburg, Pensilvania, gracias a que Rikki Rockett (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rikki_Rockett) (baterista) era el estilista de la hermana de Bret Michaels (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bret_Michaels) (vocalista), así fue como se conocieron y luego reclutaron a Bobby Dall (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Dall) (bajista) y después se les unió Matt Smith (guitarrista).Después de haberse mudado a Los Angeles, California, Matt Smith decidió regresar a Pensilvania ya a que su novia estaba esperando su primer hijo, reemplazándolo C.C. DeVille (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.C._DeVille), quien se convertiría en el guitarrista principal.reclutaron a Bobby Dall (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Dall) (bajista) y después se les unió Matt Smith (guitarrista).Después de haberse mudado a Los Angeles, California, Matt Smith decidió regresar a Pensilvania ya a que su novia estaba esperando su primer hijo, reemplazándolo C.C. Llega el éxito

En 1986 Poison graba su primer álbum Look what the cat dragged in, que incluía tres hits: "Talk Dirty to me", "I Want Action" y "I Won't Forget You". El álbum llegó a vender 2 millones de copias. En el año 1987 la banda graba el cover de Kiss (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiss): "Rock and Roll all nite", que se usó dentro del soundtrack de la película "Less than Zero".
En 1988 Poison lanza su segundo disco titulado Open up and say... Ahh! que vendió 8 millones de copias en todo el mundo, el disco incluyó los éxitos: "Every Rose has its thorn", "Nothin' but a good time", "Fallen Angel" y el cover "Your Mama don't dance".
El tercer Álbum llegó en 1990, llamado Flesh & Blood también gozó de mucho éxito, el disco fue multi-platino, donde sobresalieron tres sencillos: "Unskinny Bop", "Ride the wind" y la balada "Something to Believe in".
