La patología —del griego, estudio (λογία, logía) del sufrimiento o daño (πάθος, mani;o pathos)— es la parte de la medicina encargada del estudio de las enfermedades en su más amplio sentido, es decir, como procesos o estados anormales de causas conocidas o desconocidas.
Las pruebas que mejor demuestran la existencia de una enfermedad se basan principalmente en el examen de una lesión en todos sus niveles estructurales, la evidencia de la presencia de un microorganismo (bacteria, parásito, hongo o virus) cuando se trata de una enfermedad infecciosa o la alteración de algún o algunos componentes del organismo (por ejemplo la glucosa en la diabetes mellitus, o la hemoglobina, en la anemia).
Los patólogos pueden ser anatomopatólogos o patólogos clínicos. Los anatomopatólogos se dedican al diagnóstico basado en la observación morfológica de lesiones, principalmente a través de la microscopía de luz, utilizando diversos tipos de tinciones. Los patólogos clínicos se dedican al diagnóstico a través de los análisis propios del laboratorio clínico, e incluye Hematología analítica, Inmunología diagnóstica, Microbiología diagnóstica, Bioquímica o Química clínica, Citogenética y Genética Molecular.
La patología no debe confundirse con la nosología, que es la descripción y sistematización de las enfermedades.
