La intención de la autora, Jill Greenberg, era protestar sobre las consecuencias sociales y políticas de la Administración Bush, sin embargo muchos bienpensantes intentaron desviar la atención, acusándola de maltrato a los pequeños, e incluso de tortura. Jill Greenberg se defendió alegando que las tomas duraban escasamente 30 segundos, que el caramelo se lo devolvían inmediatamente, que el niño se iba con su madre para que la consolara, y que incluso una de las niñas era su propia hija.
