Vivian Maier: el descubrimiento de un tesoro

Después de descubrir que los negativos eran imágenes callejeras de la ciudad de Chicago, empezó a interesarse por la autora y a publicar algunas muestras en una cuenta de Flickr. Pronto se dio cuenta de** la fuerza de aquellas imágenes** de los años sesenta, y quienes las vieron le aconsejaron que investigara más sobre su autora y que presentara las fotos en alguna exposición.


Convertido en curador y único propietario de más de 30.000 imágenes comenzó su investigación y su pasión. Se compró la misma cámara de la fotógrafa y recorrió las mismas calles de Chicago. Encontró el nombre de la fotógrafa, Vivian Maier, escrito con lápiz en uno de los sobres que contenían los negativos. Buscando en Internet se encontró con el obituario de Maier que había muerto sólo pocos días antes sin nunca revelar su historia o la razón de esas imágenes que nunca tuvieran público.


Vivian Maier llegó a Estados Unidos desde Francia a principio de los años 30, trabajó en Nueva York como vendedora de dulces cuando tenía 11 o 12 años. Era socialista, feminista, crítica de cine. Aprendió a hablar inglés yendo al teatro. La mayor parte del tiempo usaba chaquetas y zapatos de hombre y un gran sobrero. Siempre estaba sacando fotos que nunca mostraba a nadie.
Llegó a Chicago como niñera de una familia rica y en algunas de las imágenes se pueden ver a estos niños en la playa. El descubrimiento está teniendo una gran recepción en los medios con muchos artículos y exposiciones y un libro sobre la autora que Maloof está preparando actualmente.


Las fotografías de Maier son sencillas y humanas, en las que captura momentos de intimidad en la ciudad. A través de su lente descubre rostros, personajes, con una mirada poderosa para encontrar la belleza en el mundo cotidiano. No sólo se trata de un valioso documento sobre la ciudad de Chicago sino el descubrimiento de una gran fotógrafa que hasta hoy el mundo desconocía.
