Formados en 1983 por el guitarrista Dimebag Darrell Abbott, su hermano Vinnie Paul Abbott y el bajista Rexx "Rocker" Brown (posteriormente renombrándose Rex Brown). Pantera son para algunos una de las bandas de Heavy Metal/Groove Metal más influyentes y de culto de la década de los 90, manteniéndose siempre fieles a su estilo y sonido, trazando algunas de las raíces sonoras de grupos como KoRn, Disturbed, Tool y SlipKnot. Pantera lanzó tres olvidados álbumes (Metal Magic, Projects In The Jungle y I Am The Night), antes de descartar al cantante, Terry Glaze, en favor de Phil Anselmo, con el que sacaron Power Metal (1988), en el cual se encontraba la canción Proud To Be Loud, escrita por el guitarrista de Keel, Marc Ferrari. Estos discos anteriores se correspondían con un estilo más Glam Rock, con pelo cardado y una gran influencia de Kiss (casualmente el grupo favorito en la infancia de los hermanos Abbott, junto a Judas Priest). Con Cowboys From Hell (1990) la música de Pantera se encaminaba bastante por las líneas del Heavy Metal clásico, con canto y grito en las voces (aunque los gritos sean un poco más guturales que los típicos falsetes del Heavy clásico, dictaminando lo que faltaba por venir) y los riffs y solos de guitarra de Dimebag Darrel. La voz de Phil Anselmo, en particular, se ha desarrollado considerablemente desde entonces, siendo más influenciada por el Black Metal. Las canciones más destacadas de este álbum son la que da nombre al disco, Cowboys From Hell, Heresy, Cemetery Gates y Domination. Posteriormente llegó Vulgar Display Of Power (1992), disco aclamado por muchos críticos y fans como el mejor de su trayectoria. Comparándolo con el anterior se encuentra una mayor madurez, más personalidad y estilo propio, destacando las letras de Anselmo, el trabajo de Dimebag Darrell en los ritmos y solos de guitarra y la peculiar sincopación rítmica a cargo de su hermano Vinnie Paul en la batería. De este disco cabría destacar los temas Walk, A New Level, This Love y Hollow. Con la popularidad adquirida tras Vulgar, se vieron en la tesitura de seguir por el fácil camino de la fama o mantenerse firmes en sus convicciones y su sonido, eligiendo la segunda opción. En 1994 publican el disco Far Beyond Driven, siendo un disco más directo y brutal que su antecesor, aunque perdiendo en parte la calidad de sus letras. Durante el año 1994, el cantante Phil Anselmo, viendo acentuada su adicción a la heroína, fue declarado muerto durante dos minutos tras una sobredosis, y fue reanimado satisfactoriamente. Esto fue el detonante para cortar de raíz su adicción y acentuar aún más su carácter. De este disco se podrían destacar los temas I'm Broken, 5 Minutes Alone y la versión realizada de la canción de Black Sabbath Planet Caravan. Tras este disco ganaron un gran respeto entre los fans más acérrimos de la música más "brutal", el underground metálico. Far Beyond Driven debutó en #1 en Australia y Estados Unidos , siendo el primer album de metal en lograrlo.
