ARGUMENTO
La película se inicia con una conversación entre una anciana y su nieta, la cual contempla desde la ventana cómo cae la nieve y, curiosa, le pregunta a su abuela la razón de que nieve. Así pues, la mujer comienza su relato... Su historia se inicia cuando una vendedora de maquillaje llamada Peg, entra a una mansión con el fin de vender sus productos de belleza. Al adentrarse en el lugar se encuentra con Edward, un hombre que fue creado a partir de un robot, mas no pudo ser terminado por la repentina muerte de su creador, dejándolo con tijeras por manos, y que por diversos factores jamás salió de su hogar encerrándose en un mundo de fantasías. Conmovida por su bondad e inocencia decide llevárselo a su casa. Nadie en su familia (su esposo y su hijo) parecen incómodos con la presencia de Edward e incluso los vecinos se interesan en el misterioso huésped de Peg. Sin embargo, al llegar Kim, la hija mayor de Peg, se desata una serie de problemas, pues ella sí se siente incomodada con Edward en casa. Edward se enamora de ella. Sin embargo ella tiene novio, Jim, el cual de cierta forma evita que Kim descubra sus sentimientos hacia Edward. Debido a su inocencia, muchos de los vecinos de Peg se aprovechan de él de formas un tanto ridículas e inútiles. Sin embargo, Jim encuentra cómo aprovecharse de las "mágicas manos" de Edward, haciendo que abra las puertas para robar dinero de su propia casa. En el momento en el que son descubiertos por la policía, es abandonado por todos, a excepción de Kim. Es en ese momento cuando ella descubre que lo que siente por Edward es más que lástima o compasión, es amor. Cuando sale de la cárcel y después de varios incidentes decide volver a su mansión. Al final, la anciana resulta ser Kim y, después de un respiro, contesta a su nieta que nieva porque Edward está vivo, porque cuando él llegó a su hogar fue la primer vez que nevó y no podría seguir ocurriendo a no ser que él aún viviera.

Edward intenta demostrar a cada uno en su vecindad que puede aceptar las cosas de la vida y ser feliz. También ofrece una renovación para la vecindad entera pues con el filo de navaja de sus manos puede hacer cosas como realizar esculturas podando las plantas.

Tim Burton le pidió a Vincent Price, un actor de películas de terror de bajo presupuesto de su juventud, que interpretase al inventor en su película. La razón es que Tim Burton amaba el trabajo que hizo este hombre en el cine y quería que apareciera en su película como homenaje, siendo este uno de los últimos papeles que realizó antes de su muerte.
