Para seguir las raíces y evolución de esta banda quizá sea mejor empezar hablando de la vida de Ian Frasier Kilmister. Mr. Kilmister nació en Stoke-On-Trent (Staffordshire, Inglaterra) el 24 de diciembre de 1945, hijo de un sacerdote que abandonó a su familia cuando Ian solo tenía tres meses. Lemmy (apodado así por su insistencia al pedir algo de dinero: “lend me a fiver”...) pronto descubriría el rock'n'roll gracias a Little Richard, Elvis, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, MC5... Fascinado ante esa nueva música, pronto empezó a tocar la guitarra en diversas bandas de R&B de ámbito local (The Rainmakers, Motown Sect), consiguiendo grabar en alguna banda de mayor nivel como The Rockin’ Vicars. En este tiempo también sería “roadie” de un guitarrista que pasaría a la historia de la música moderna, Jimmy Hendrix.


Su primera gran oportunidad llegó en 1971 cuando ingresó en la famosa banda de rock psicodélico (o rock espacial como a ellos les gustaba denominarse) Hawkwind, aunque por las circunstancias del momento tuvo que cambiar su instrumento habitual, la guitarra, por un bajo, instrumento que seguirá tocando durante toda su carrera con ese estilo tan personal y a la vez salvaje. Con Hawkwind grabó discos como “Space ritual”, “Hall of the mountain grill” o “Warrior on the edge of time”, cosechando grandes éxitos de critica y publico, y llegando a firmar un contrato con Atlantic Records. Desgraciadamente, las relaciones entre Lemmy y el resto de la banda no parecían ser del todo buenas, y cuando Lemmy fue detenido en la frontera de Canadá, camino de Toronto, por posesión de anfetaminas (realmente las autoridades pensaban que se trataba de cocaína) la banda aprovechó para despedirle.


Lemmy se encontraba otra vez sin banda, por lo que decidió formar la suya propia. Su primera opción como nombre fue Bastard, pero su manager de entonces, Douglas Smith, le convenció para cambiárselo, optando por el que todos conocemos, Motörhead, equivalente americano de la palabra inglesa “speed freak”... muy acertado teniendo en cuenta las circunstancias que le obligaron a abandonar su anterior banda. Lemmy tenía muy claro lo que quería hacer, tal como expresó a la prensa de la época: “Seremos la banda de rock n roll más sucia del mundo. ¡Si nos trasladáramos al lado de tu casa tus plantas morirían!”.


Los primeros compañeros de fatigas de Lemmy fueron Lucas Fox en la batería y el ex-Pink Fairies Larry Wallis como guitarrista. El primer show (en el Chalkfarm Roundhouse de Londres, el 20 de julio de 1975) resultó un completo desastre, como tampoco fue especialmente bueno el concierto que ofrecieron en el Hammersmith Odeon como teloneros de Blue Oyster Cult. La prensa musical pronto los crucificó denominándolos como “la peor banda del planeta”. Aun así el grupo siguió adelante (gracias a una base de fans cada vez más amplia) y entre diciembre de 1975 y enero de 1976 grabaron un disco para United Artist, con un cambio en el line-up, ya que tras la batería esta vez se sentaba un hombre clave en la historia de Motörhead, Phil “Philty Animal” Taylor, un amigo de Lemmy sin experiencia profesional en el mundo de la música pero que aportaría a la base rítmica una personalidad y contundencia únicas.


Lamentablemente, a United Artist no pareció agradarle mucho el resultado final, y “On Parole” no vería la luz (por el momento). La banda estaba realmente desanimada, a punto de disolver el grupo y dedicarse a otra cosa. No obstante, la inclusión como guitarrista de Eddie “Fast” Clarke traería nuevos aires al grupo, y como ya veremos, este hombre también será clave en el auge de Motörhead al superestrellato. Larry Wallis dejaría la banda poco después, estableciendo la formación más clásica y famosa de la banda: Lemmy, Eddie y Taylor.

En verano de 1976 contactaron con Stiff Records, que les ofreció grabarles un single. Dicho y hecho, Lemmy y compañía pronto grabaron un sencillo conteniendo “White line fever” y la versión de Tamla Motown “Leavin’ here”. La mala fortuna continuó cebándose con el grupo, pues United Artist impidió la edición del sencillo (aun tenían un contrato vigente, pese a que no quería editar nada del grupo), y la grabación no vería la luz, teniendo el honor de ser el único single en la historia de la música que salió al mercado directamente como reedición. De todas maneras el single sí salió en Europa, así como en diversos piratas y recopilaciones, creciendo ligeramente la popularidad del grupo
