Sendero Luminoso, cuyo nombre oficial dice ser Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso (PCP-SL), es una organización terrorista de tendencia ideológica maoísta originada en el Perú.[1] La meta de Sendero Luminoso es reemplazar las instituciones peruanas, que consideran burguesas, por un régimen revolucionario campesino comunista, presumiblemente iniciándose a través del concepto maoísta de la Nueva Democracia. En 1980, desató el conflicto armado interno del cual participó como principal agente hasta la captura de su líder, Abimael Guzmán Reynoso en 1992, tras lo cual sólo ha tenido actuaciones esporádicas.[2] La ideología y tácticas de Sendero Luminoso han tenido influencia sobre grupos insurgentes de corte maoísta como el Partido Comunista de Nepal y organizaciones afiliadas al Movimiento Revolucionario Internacional.
Ampliamente condenado por su brutalidad, que incluye violencia aplicada contra campesinos, dirigentes sindicales, autoridades elegidas popularmente y la población civil en general,[3] es considerada una organización terrorista por el gobierno del Perú, además de la Unión Europea[4] y Canadá los cuales prohíben proveerle de fondos u otro apoyo financiero.[5] Además de esto, Sendero Luminoso está en la lista de organizaciones terroristas extranjeras del Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos
