La lepra es una enfermedad infecciosa, de nula transmisibilidad cuando está debidamente tratada, aunque los pacientes que no reciben tratamiento, o este es inadecuado, si constituyen una fuente de contagio. Puede estar producida por la bacteria Mycobacterium leprae o por Mycobacterium lepromatosis.[1] [2]Gerhard Armauer Hansen, debido a lo cual se lo denomina Mycobacterium leprae fue descubierto en 1874 por el médico noruego bacilo de Hansen, Mycobacterium lepromatosis es otra bacteria que tiene muchas similitudes con mycobacterium leprae y fue identificada en el año 2008 en la Universidad de Texas.[3]
La lepra fue históricamente incurable, mutilante y vergonzosa, al punto de que, entre otras medidas, se decretó en 1909, por demanda de la "Sociedad de Patologías Exóticas, «la exclusión sistemática de los leprosos» y su reagrupamiento en Leproserías como medida esencial de profilaxis.
