El planetoide personal es un cálculo individual que te permite saber que tanto territorio, energía y recursos consumes, para que luego trates de hacer modificaciones en tu estilo de vida.

Puedes calcular tu planetoide personal a través de una encuesta con preguntas simples que se refieren a hábitos alimenticios, vivienda, movilidad y bienes y servicios. Cada una da varias opciones, uno escoge la más parecida a su estilo de vida y al final aparece una tabla con los resultados.

Muchos planetoides personales constituyen la Huella Ecológica, un concepto creado en 1995 por los investigadores Mathis Wackernagel y William Rees.

Ellos establecieron como parámetro para medir el consumo y los desechos generados, la disponibilidad de suelos productivos en el mundo con respecto al volumen de la población.
Así, la unidad de cálculo de la Huella Ecológica es la hectárea. Por eso, en la tabla de resultados le dicen: "Su Huella Ecológica es de --- hectáreas globales. En comparación, la Huella Ecológica de su país (Colombia) es de 1,3 hectáreas globales".

Lo que hace este cálculo es evaluar el impacto humano en la naturaleza.
Muestra cuanta tierra y agua se necesitan para producir todo lo que una persona consume. Además mide los recursos disponibles en la Naturaleza y los que el hombre utiliza y devuelve a la Tierra convertidos en basura.

En términos globales, las perspectivas son críticas, ya que actualmente la Huella Ecológica de la humanidad es 30% mayor que los recursos existentes en el mundo.
