La noción de momia está asociada a la de un cadáver embalsamado o preparado con la intención de conservarlo el mayor tiempo posible, usualmente por razones religiosas. Los cadáveres muy rara vez se mantienen incorruptos, debido a que las condiciones para su conservación natural son fortuitas y escasas.

Algunas antiguas culturas han dado, en variadas ocasiones a lo largo de la historia, una gran importancia a la conservación de los cadáveres de sus difuntos como parte de sus ritos y costumbres funerarias. El Antiguo Egipto es el ejemplo más conocido de cultura que efectuaba la momificación ritual de sus muertos. Aunque de este lado del mundo también existen bastantes casos: por ejemplo , las momias de la Cultura Chinchorro, la cual se estableció en el sur del Perú y el Norte de Chile, encontrándose en la ciudad de Arica, las momias de los inca y las de Guanajuato en Méjico.

yo vivo en guanajuato mexico y la verdad no es tan escalofriante parecen de papel, cobran por entrar a verlas como 4 dolares amaericanos y siempre ahi mucha gente para verlas si quieren mas datos con gusto se los proporciono
