Dependiendo de las distintas acciones del jugador, el juego es un perfil psicológico, que afectará a la aparición de personajes en el juego, así como la aparición de monstruos.
En el juego no hay armas, Harry equipados sólo con una linterna y un teléfono celular con el que se pueden ver mapas, recibe mensajes de texto y audio, tomar fotografías y realizar llamadas a cualquier número.
Como en los otros juegos de la serie, en quebrados recuerdos son dos del mundo: el normal y suplentes. El último jugador que siempre tiene que romper con los monstruos, que se pueden tirar, pero no se puede herir o matar. Un mundo alternativo es muy diferente de lo que fue visto en otras partes: en vez de fuego, sangre, paredes manchadas y rejas oxidadas - calles de hielo, frío y mucha nieve.
