El Área 51 es una sección situada enel centro de la Nellis Air Force Base y es propiedad del Departamentode Defensa de los Estados Unidos y de la Fuerza Aérea al norte de LasVegas a 170 km de Nevada, aparentemente contiene instalaciones donde seprueban aeronaves secretas. El nombre oficial es Air Force Flight TestCenter, Detachment 3, pero se le conoce también como: Watertown,Dreamland, Groom Lake, Rancho Paraíso, La Granja, La Caja, y Área deDirección del Desarrollo.


También es famosa como tema de muchas conspiraciones del fenómenoOVNI. Ya que para los seguidores y fanáticos de teorías conspiratorias,ovnis y extraterrestres el Área 51 es una base militar donde elgobierno de losEstados Unidos oculta, estudia, y experimentatecnología de origen extraterrestre.

El nombre Área 51 proviene de una división en zonas que hizo elgobierno estadounidense para la administración de servicios con laintención de designar una porción del desierto de Arizona.

La base militar en cuestión, parece haber sido una instalación dela CIA desde la que partían vuelos espía en dirección a la URSS. Losmodernos aviones usados con este fin pueden haber sido confundidos conOVNIS
