Virtualbox - program to create a virtual operating systems (machines). Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7), DOS / Windows 3. x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD.

VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while Sun ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria.

Some of the features of VirtualBox are:
• Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client / server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don't have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox.
• Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers.
• Guest Additions for Windows and Linux. VirtualBox has special software that can be installed inside Windows and Linux virtual machines to improve performance and make integration much more seamless. Among the features provided by these Guest Additions are mouse pointer integration and arbitrary screen solutions (eg by resizing the guest window).
• Shared folders. Like many other virtualization solutions, for easy data exchange between hosts and guests, VirtualBox allows for declaring certain host directories as "shared folders", which can then be accessed from within virtual machines.


Oracle has announced the first beta version of virtualization on the desktop, VirtualBox 3.2, which contains the following changes:
Experimental support for MacOS X as guest OS;
Dynamic increase or decrease memory the guest OS (as long as only works on 64 bit host);
Hot Plug and off processors for Linux-only guests and connect to some Windows-guests;
New hypervisor: support for large memory pages on 64 bit platforms VT-x/AMD-V for increased performance and added support for direct instruction guest OS on Intel processors with the technology VT-x (for this option must be enabled nested paging) - this should speed up the launch of a guest OS, use the protected mode;
It is now possible to delete snapshots running a guest OS;
Added support for configuration through a graphical interface of the guest OS on more than one monitor;
Improved emulation of USB tablet'ok and keyboards, even if the additions to the guest OS is not installed;
Added controller LsiLogic SAS;
Implemented video acceleration in RDP session;
The NAT can be configured using the API and utility VBoxManage;
Add to guests: added ability to run applications from the guest host (probably through the labels);
Improved support for standard virtual hard disk OVF - now unsupported format field descriptions are stored.

The following items were fixed and / or added since 3.2.0 Beta 1:

OVF: supports import / export of LsiLogicSAS controller (compatibility fix)
VRDP: allow to bind to localhost only (Mac OS X hosts; bug # 5227)

Main: enabling a USB keyboard no longer disables the PS / 2 keyboard (EFI access in OS X guests) (improvement)
Linux hosts: support VDE networking mode if the VDE library (libvdeplug.so.2) can be found on the host
Guest control: faster execution / retrieval of output, extended documentation, fixed some shutdown issues (improvement)
Linux Additions: The shared folders kernel module is now loaded on demand. Fixes loading of shared folders from / etc / fstab in Ubuntu 10.04 guests.
Guest Additions: new icons according to new branding
Guest Additions: VM information properties now are only updated if necessary (performance optimization)
3D: Restoring Ubuntu Lucid VM with 3D effects hangs
