Description: The 2019 New Year's Concert will be conducted for the first time by Christian Thielemann. A native of Berlin, Thielemann has been a regular and welcome guest of the Vienna Philharmonic since 2000, with the result that his first New Year s Concert may be seen as setting an example and providing an appropriate tribute to his previous work with the orchestra. According to the orchestra s chairman, Daniel Froschauer, orchestra and musicians trust each other completely: "The profound musical understanding and trust that have existed from the outset and that have always functioned perfectly have subsequently borne remarkable fruit in the symphonic repertory as well."

La Passion selon Marc. Une Passion après Auschwitz (The Passion According to Mark. A Passion after Auschwitz), premiered in April 2017. The project was commissioned to French composer Michaël Levinas by the Swiss association «Musique pour un temps présent», as part of the events commemorating the 500th anniversary of Luther’s reform. This original oratorio is not only a reinterpretation or a mere revisitation of the Passion – what the many references to Bach’s Passions could lead to believe, it painfully faces, indeed, the irreconciliable nature of the Passion and the Holocaust.

Description: This wonderful arrangement was transcribed by Merlin Patterson in 1997/98. Before then, there was no complete transcript of The Planets suite that existed for concert band. Holst had personally arranged but not transcribed Mars and Jupiter for concert band ensemble, nor had he transcribed any of the other movements in the suite for a concert band ensemble. This recording by the U.S. Marine Band is special because it’s a complete and true transcription of the original suite. Patterson has taken everything from that orchestral suite, changing or omitting nothing, and presenting it in its original key.
