En el último medio siglo, Detroit perdió más de la mitad de su población. Aquellos que abandonan la ciudad eran en su mayoría personas de raza blanca que huyeron a las afueras. Los negros son la población que ha tenido que gobernar la ciudad con recursos limitados.
