Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds es una banda de rock/post-punk con una alineación internacional y cambiante. Fue formada en 1984 por dos miembros de la desaparecida banda australiana The Birthday Party: Nick Cave (cantante, compositor) y el músico Mick Harvey. Se les unió el guitarrista Blixa Bargeld, miembro de la banda alemana Einstürzende Neubauten, el ex guitarrista de la banda Magazine Hugo Race y el también miembro de esta última banda Barry Adamson, bajista y pianista. Con esta alineación la banda grabó y lanzó su álbum debut From Her To Eternity en 1984. Con una larga trayectoria que comenzó a principios de los años setenta, su música se caracteriza por un tono oscuro y siniestro, pero también por un interés hacia lo violento y lo erótico. Nick Cave puede asociarse a grupos y cantautores como Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Leonard Cohen, Shane MacGowan, entre otros, todos ellos seguidores de una estética bohemia y urbana.

From Her To Eternity es el álbum de debut de Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Fue editado en 1984, tras la disolución de la anterior banda de Cave, The Birthday Party. En realidad varios de los temas habían sido compuestos para ser grabados en un hipotético nuevo álbum de esa banda. El título es un juego de palabras sobre el libro y película "From here to eternity".

The Firstborn Is Dead es el segundo álbum lanzado por Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, que fue Lanzado en 1985. Nick Cave explora su obsesión con la música sureña Americana, junto con sus referencias a Elvis Presley y Blind Lemon Jefferson. Tender Prey es el quinto álbum de Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds y, probablemente, el más esencial de su etapa de los años 80. Salió al mercado en 1988 marcando el punto y final a su etapa berlinesa, la más oscura, arisca y excesiva. Posteriormente vendría su desintoxicación y transformación, ya asentado en Brasil, en el cantautor elegante y sofisticado del también excepcional The Good Son (1990). Tender Prey contiene el aclamado tema "The Mercy Seat", que ha sido tocado en casi todas sus actuaciones en directo desde 1988, y fue versionado por Johnny ****.

The Good Son es el sexto álbum grabado por el artista australiano Nick Cave junto a The Bad Seeds. Grabado en Brasil, país al que se había mudado recientemente y publicado en 1990, tuvo una mala recepción tanto por parte de sus admiradores como por los críticos que no aceptaron el giro que representaba hacia su faceta más lírica y sentimental que le alejaba totalmente de la vertiente más visceral y violenta de sus anteriores trabajos. Este cambio fue motivado por su nueva relación sentimental con la artista brasileña Viviene Carniero así como por su reciente cura de desintoxicación. Esta nueva situación produjo un álbum lleno de temas lentos y preciosistas, con envolventes orquestaciones de cuerda y letras minimalistas de fuerte carga espiritual.

Henry's Dream es el séptimo disco editado por Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, el 12 de Mayo de 1992. Hay posibles referencias a la serie de poemas de John Berryman, "The Dream Songs", los cuales describen los sueños de su protagonista, Henry. Este disco es uno de los favoritos entre los seguidores de los Seeds, a pesar de que Nick Cave mismo ha declarado no estar conforme con la producción de David Briggs. Briggs prefería un método en vivo en el estudio que utilizó con Neil Young. Esto llevó a que Cave y Mick Harvey re-mezclaran el álbum, y a que se incluyeran muchas de sus canciones en el disco en vivo Live Seeds, ya que Cave quería "hacer justicia" a los temas.

The Boatman's Call es el décimo álbum de estudio de Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Fue editado en 1997 convirtiéndose en el gran álbum de madurez de Cave. Se trata de un disco envuelto en una atmósfera plena de melancolía y lirismo. Las canciones, construidas en torno al sonido del piano, están arropadas por una instrumentación minimalista y preciosista a cargo de unos Bad Seeds más humildes y contenidos que nunca. Las doloridas canciones de amor que lo componen fueron, al parecer, compuestas bajo la influencia de las rupturas sentimentales de Cave con la que fuera su mujer, la brasileña Viviane Carneiro y con la cantante PJ Harvey.

The Best of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds se lanzó en 1998, después de The Boatman's Call (1997). Para decidir la lista de temas, Cave le pidió a cada uno de los Bad Seeds, los pasados y los actuales, para que eligieran sus temas favoritos de sus 10 álbumes; sus listas se discutirían luego, hasta que se confeccionara una lista final. Finalmente, sólo se quejó el guitarrista y fundador Mick Harvey, y es la lista suya, sin modificaciones, la que compone el album.

No More Shall We Part es el undécimo álbum de estudio de Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. El álbum fue lanzado después de un intervalo de 4 años desde la grabación del aclamado The Boatman's Call. Cave tuvo que sobreponerse a su fuerte adicción a la heroína y alcohol en el período 1999-2000 antes de empezar a trabajar en el álbum. El mismo recibió en su mayoría críticas positivas, frecuentemente llamado "hermoso" con su gran uso de piano, aunque a algunos críticos o los fans que preferían su música anterior no les gustó. Este álbum muestra el talento de The Bad Seeds, con elaboradas secciones instrumentales en casi todas las pistas. Además, las canciones de Cave son menos oscuras de lo usual, y canta en un rango vocal más amplio que anteriormente, llegando a Alto en varias pistas.

Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus es el décimotercer lanzamiento de la banda Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Es un disco doble, con 17 canciones, y fue editado el 20 de Septiembre de 2004. El álbum fue grabado por Nick Launay en el estudio Ferber de París con la alineación de The Bad Seeds incluyendo a Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Thomas Wydler, Martyn Casey, Conway Savage, Jim Sclavunos, Warren Ellis, y James Johnston. Fue el primer álbum de la banda en el que no participó Blixa Bargeld. Cave decidió repartir el rol de los bateristas para los dos discos, teniendo a Wydler y Sclavunos al mando de la batería en cada CD.

Dig Lazarus Dig!!! es el décimocuarto lanzamiento de la banda Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. El disco fue grabado en Junio y Julio de 2007 en los estudios The State of the Ark en Richmond, Londres y fue mezclado por Nick Launay en British Grove en Chiswick, y fue editado el 3 de Marzo de 2008. Es el segundo álbum de estudio de los Bad Seeds sin el guitarrista Blixa Bargeld y presenta la misma alineación del álbum doble Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus (2004). Es también el primero en ser lanzado tras el proyecto paralelo de los Bad Seeds, Grinderman. En varias entrevistas Cave afirmó que este disco "sonará como Grinderman", implicando un sonido cercano al garage rock.
