This, one of my all-time fav CD's. A masterwork, converging his
Weather Report, Miles driven soundscape, Shorter really rocks &
swings on "Remote Control" you can't sit still, "Condition Red"
rocks in hyper-drive and "Mahogany Bird" is a sweet horn
floating along a mystic staircase. Other tracs are notable also.
One of his best works. Yes, Wayne Shorter was one of the driving
forces within Weather Report if you missed that fact. Sadly,
this CD is "Out of Print".

When "Phantom Navigator" was first released, there were cries of
"Sellout!" because of the slickness of the production, use of
pop song forms, and sparse solos. This was said to be Shorter's
"bubblegum record." Nothing could be further from the truth.
This is arguably Shorter's most experimental solo record ever,
including his long-form "The All Seeing Eye" and the records
from his "free jazz" period, which include "Supernova" and the
recently discovered "Moto Grosso Feio." Like Steely Dan, on
whose song "Aja" he memorably guest soloed, Shorter uses the
slickness of the production, the prettiness of the
instrumentation and the repetitive song forms to camoflauge
radical compositions. Sure, "Red Alert" has a rock beat, but
when have you heard a chromatic stepwise bass pattern coupled
with dissonant harmonies, wedded to such ferocious soloing? How
often do you hear such ambiguous harmony, as on "Flagships?"
Sure, "Remote Control" has pop-like elements, but when was the
last time you heard saxophones, mandolin samples, and a
synthesized lion roar in a pop song? Never, that's when. So why
is this cd criminally underrated? I'll tell you why. To
appreciate this album, you need an open mind and open ears, both
of which are sorely lacking in the Ken Burns/Wynton Marsalis
mentality. Those who think "Phantom Navigator" simplistic should
try transcribing some of the arrangements or solos
therein--that'll wipe the smug, self-appointed-cultural-guardian
look off their faces. Sadly, "Phantom Navigator" was Shorter's
last great album, up to this point, although his playing is
still wonderful (check out his work on John Scofield's "Quiet").

Wayne Shorter (born August 25, 1933) is an American jazz
saxophonist and composer.
He is generally acknowledged to be jazz's greatest living
composer,[1] and many of his compositions have become standards.
Shorter's output has earned worldwide recognition, critical
praise and various commendations, including multiple Grammy
Awards.[2]
Shorter first came to wide prominence in the late 1950s as a
member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey's
Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he went on to join Miles Davis's
Second Great Quintet, and from there he co-founded the jazz
fusion band Weather Report. He has recorded over 20 albums as a
bandleader.

On Before the Rain, tenor saxophonist-composer Noah Preminger makes it clear
that his widely praised debut album, Dry Bridge Road, was no fluke. This
debut for Palmetto Records, is marked by the same sense of adventure and
exploration, but even greater lyricism, compositional depth, and group
interplay. Working with familiar associates, pianist Frank Kimbrough,
bassist John Hebert, and drummer Matt Wilson, Preminger opts for an album of
mostly ballad-tempo performances that give everyone in the band the
opportunity to delve into some highly nuanced solo and ensemble playing. An
album of ballads is not what one usually expects from a young player on his

Few songwriters are as driven as Ray Wylie Hubbard; at 65, he's writing,
recording, performing, producing, touring, and scoring movies, and doesn't
give a **** if you don't get it. His D.I.Y. aesthetic would make a punk
rocker proud: he owns his own label and publishing company. For the past
decade, Hubbard's distilled his sound to its essences. The Grifter's Hymnal,

A: Enlightenment B: Endarkenment (Hint: There Is No C), but it's wilder,
nastier. Hubbard's lyric trademarks are intact; he continues to poetically
detail the intersecting worlds he lives in, cultural, spiritual, carnal,
past and present -- his poignant observations are balanced by his wicked
sense of humor. But it's the sound on Grifter's Hymnal that grabs the
listener initially. It captures the raw experience of music-making in the
moment. "Coricidin Bottle" threatens to derail from the jump, a burning
electric solo by his son Lucas and careening kick drums and floor toms by
Rick Richards push it into the red. Ian McLagan's piano fills out the
punchy, electric guitar strut on "South of the River." "Lazarus" (one of
five songs with no bass) is populated by ramped-up, nearly distorted
acoustic slide, handclaps, drums, and bird feeder (!) by Richards. Hubbard's
grizzled delivery keenly observes America's contradictions before razoring
in on gratitude, stating with deadpan certainty: "At least we ain't
Lazarus/who had to think twice about dyin'." The burning rocker "New Year's
Eve at the Gates of ****," is bitingly funny; yet it asks deep questions
about the root nature of good and evil. Audley Freed's electric guitar duels
with Hubbard's slide, Richards' kick drum, and Reiff's bass. Its grit hits
with chaotic force. "Train Yard," written with Liz Foster of the Trishas, is
a dirty-*** sexual love song. Ringo Starr's "Coochy Coochy" features the
Beatle on backing vocals and percussion. Loose, swampy rock fuels "Mother
Blues" (named for the legendary Dallas club); it's part autobiography, part
cultural history, and part reverie; but it's all lyric gold. Hubbard makes
it nearly cinematic without being wordy. "Ask God" evokes the spirit of
Lonnie Johnson in its spooky, minor-key gospel blues. The Grifter's Hymnal
is truly inspired. It's a swaggering, sexy, shake-your-***, greasy, deep
roots record. It pursues the same mercurial muse that bit everyone from
Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf to the White Stripes, the Black
Keys, and Black Angels, down alleys, in bars and bedrooms, across history,
myth, and space. Hubbard and company have captured it alive and kicking

Pinetop Perkins played piano until he was 97 years old, so this previously
unreleased set featuring Perkins relaxed and nimble in both solo and
small-combo studio sessions in 1986, when he was a young 73 years old, is
really just a drop in the bucket of his long career (which began in 1969
when he replaced Otis Spann as Muddy Waters' piano player). But it is indeed
a heavenly drop at that, since Perkins is so obviously comfortable here.
Among the highlights are versions of "Sitting on Top of the World," with
longtime friend Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on vocals, and "Since I Fell for
You," featuring the soulful voice of Otis Clay.

When Dion DiMucci was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues
category for 2006's Bronx in Blue, an excellent collection of blues
standards, it was an official affirmation that he was "back." In truth, he'd
never left, and had been recording all along. He issued a stellar follow-up
in 2007's Son of Skip James, a collection of revelatory blues covers and
fine new material. The third album in this blues trilogy is Tank Full of
Blues. Recorded in a trio setting, Dion produced the album, wrote all but
two selections, and played the **** out of all the guitars on it. Tank Full
of Blues is a slippery, street-smart, utterly inspired album of blues and
roots rock tunes that are free of nostalgia and drenched in history. Truth
be told, any of the current era's bluesmen would be hard pressed to come up
with lyrics near as profound as those found the in the harrowing "Ride's
Blues (For Robert Johnson)." The track offers a new myth about the great
bluesman; it delves deep into spiritual matters while addressing the terror
that lies in the heart of anyone lost to her or himself. There's a
redemptive twist that's as surprising as it is free of cliches. The meld of
acoustic and distorted snarling electric guitars tells its own story -- the
story of the blues itself -- to underscore the narrative. The title track,
offered in swaggering Chicago blues style, offers a familiar and bitingly
humorous tale of the life of an itinerant musician to be sure, but in a
larger sense, also speaks to the conflicted nature of the human heart. "Two
Trains" is a beautifully executed medley of Muddy Waters' "Still a Fool" and
Johnson's "Ramblin' on My Mind." "My Michelle" pays tribute to Jimmy Reed's
enduring musical influence and sense of humor. The strutting, updated
rockabilly in "I'm Ready to Go" lays out Dion's sense of purpose in this
world and the next. Finally, in "Bronx Poem," a spoken word piece that
closes the disc, Dion speaks the unvarnished truth about where he's been
and, perhaps even more bravely in this cynical age, where he stands --
without flinching. He possesses a rhyme skill set that would make any rapper
jealous. Accompanied by his own haunting guitars and Robert Guertin's
quietly shuffling drums, Dion celebrates humanity in the light of his
spiritual convictions. In doing so, he comes full circle to meet himself as
a street corner poet in the 1950s, and reveals his wisdom as the result of
his experiences in the past and the present. He has no need to romanticize
or apologize; he remains the keen-eyed, tender-hearted observer he has
always been. Tank Full of Blues may be the late entry in a catalog of great
work by Dion, but it stands with his best recordings. In fact, it is the
album he's been waiting an entire career to make.

At the time this album was recorded, the particularly intense blues artist
Louisiana Red was a prot g of the Blue Labor/Labor recording empire, which
was actually two guys, Kent Cooper and jazz arranger and composer Heiner
Stadler. Cooper's involvement with Red led, as in many cases of blues
producers and their clients, to co-authorship on some of the songs recorded.
Cooper and Stadler regarded Red as an artist cut from the same cloth as John
Lee Hooker or Lightning Hopkins, and of the same quality -- meaning an
intense, mood-setter of a bluesman with a sizzling improvisatory style. They
were certainly accurate in their appraisal of his talent, and their interest
in recording Red led to several classic blues albums. The fine studio sound
they got on these solo recordings makes for a superior album, and it was the
first Red would record unencumbered by a combo backing him up. Every nuance
of his playing is captured, and he is definitely the type of blues player
who thrives on solo work. He rarely sticks to a formula bar structure and
likes to stretch out his licks as if casting out a line for fish, but he
isn't a player who just stays on one chord like Hooker often did. One of
Red's original blues, in which he describes how his wife died of cancer, has
got to set some kind of a record for misery described in a blues song,
meaning it is the saddest of the sad.

Daytoner - 'Sunburst Radio' LP Steve Cantrill (aka 'Moss') devotes his
spare time to generating sunshine sounds within the humble setting of a
Penzance studio shed. As 'Daytoner', he's recently released 7" singles
for funk-fuelled dance floors along with a dozen remixes for artists
such as Smoove & Turrell, Nick Pride & The Pimptones and Mr Confuse on
various European labels. All the singles to date have also received
airplay on BBC Radio 1 and BBC6 Music. Encouraged by reactions to early
releases, Daytoner spent 3 years recording & compiling tracks for the
debut LP 'Sunburst Radio'. He's forged old sounds from good friends,
drawing on influences dug from charity shop vinyl & antique archives.As
the title may suggest, expect a roof-down, retro-ride through Latin
American, Blues, Jazz, Swing and Motown rhythms, underpinned by dance
floor break beats, linked together by valve-age voices. It's not just a
DJ's album though, as there's also a soft centre of laid-back beats,
perhaps hinting at the LP's Cornish origin. Nor is the LP just an
assembly of samples as there's key contributions from friends, such as
the stylish vocals of Jane Kennaway, Lucy Richards & Zoe Lewis on a
number of original new songs written by Daytoner. Support also comes
from the ever present bass of Patrick Redmond, Neil W Allen on slide
guitar & Andy Worthy on sax and a cast list too long to list. Song
highlights include the Latin groove of 'On My Own', the Motown stomp of
'Treat Me', the Jazz Breaks of 'The Mountain' and the minimal 'Great
Unknown'. "'Sunburst Radio' - 55 minutes of feel-good bossa, old soul,
swing jazz, blues & breaks, bundled by valve-age voices in a SW shed!"
