Adagio fue fundada y es actualmente liderada por el guitarrista fránces Stepahn Forte, el cual es acompañado en voces por David Readman (Pink Cream 69), Dirk Bruinenberg en batería (Elegy), Frank Hermanny en bajo y Richard Andersson (Time Requiem), el cual participó en el primer disco para luego ser reemplazado por el joven tecladista de 22 años Kevin Codfert.
El grupo apareció en la escena del metal el año 2001 con su disco "Sanctus Ignis", un disco que destaca por sus excelentes pasajes progresivos y gran virtuosismo.
Su segundo disco salió en el 2003, con nombre "Underworld", el cual es un disco de mayor complejidad y que da la sensación de oscuridad gracias al excelente trabajo del teclado.
