En el año 1989, tras pasar 4 años en Helloween, Kai Hansen se va de la banda. Después de un par de apariciones en los primeros discos de Blind Guardian se
decide por formar un proyecto propio. Así junto a Ralf Scheepers (vocalista - ex Tyran Pace), Uwe Wessel (bajo) y Mathias Burchard (batería), forma Gamma Ray.

En febrero de 1990, lanzan su primer álbum, "Heading for Tomorrow", el mismo año lanzan un EP llamado "Heaven Can Wait". Para el siguiente disco "Sigh no
More" (1991), Uli Kusch reemplaza a Mathias Burchard en la batería y Dirk Schlächter aparece como segundo guitarrista. En el año 1993 la banda lanza su
tercer disco, "Insanity and Genius", incorporando a Thomas Nack en la batería y Jan Rubach en el bajo, que reemplazaron a Uli y Uwe respectivamente, debido a
problemas personales.

Luego Ralf Shepperds se retira de la banda, para intentar ser el nuevo vocalista de Judas Priest,finalmente formando Primal Fear junto a Matt Sinner en 1998,
debido a esto, Kai Hansen se ve forzado a tomar las voces de la banda y con esta formación lanzan el aclamado "Land of the Free" en el año 1995, que es
seguido por un gran tour europeo ese mismo año, de donde son grabados un par de conciertos y lanzan el disco en vivo "Alive´95".

Thomas y Jan se retiran de la banda, cuando Dirk Schlächter cambia la guitarra por el bajo, con esto se incorporan Dan Zimmermann (batería, quien además toca
en la banda de Power Metal Freedom Call) y Henjo Richter (guitarra) a la banda, así graban el disco "Somewhere out in Space" en el año 1997, un disco
conceptual basado en una odisea espacial. En 1999 lanzan un gran disco llamado "Powerplant" considerado uno de los mejores por los fans, muy parecido al
anterior. En el 2000 se lanza una colectania llamada "Blast from the Past" compuesta de temas elegidos por los propios fans de la banda todos cantados por Hansen.

Por último en el año 2001 la banda lanzó el disco "No World Order" y en el 2002 lanzó un disco doble en vivo, grabado en su mayor parte en Barcelona, llamado
"Skeletons in the Closet" donde la banda toca temas que no tocan regularmente en vivo, como "Armagedon" o "Rich and Famous". Y en el 2005 sacaron un nuevo
disco llamado Majestic, en el cual se conserva el virtuosismo y el sonido compacto de la banda. El 19 de Noviembre de 2007 salió a la venta Land of The Free II, el que seria la continuación conceptual del disco Land Of The Free del año 1995, y con el que vuelven a un estilo de gran velocidad y tecnica despues de una época mas oscura del Majestic. En 2007 giran con Helloween y Axxis en el "Hellish rock 2007/08", despues de una reconciliación con los integrantes de su
antiguo grupo. Durante este tour es grabado el concierto que dan en Barcelona para incluir en un DVD que se espera para 2008.

Desde los inicios de Gamma Ray siempre ha habido un gran apoyo de los fans de Helloween que estaban más del bando de Kai y su inclinación melódica. Esto ha
generado una dicotomía "irreconciliable" entre quienes ven en Hansen al "antiguo Helloween" y "el actual Helloween". No obstante, el Hellish tour 2007/08 da
muestra de una reconciliación entre bandas y fans.
