Historia:


El nombre de la banda, tal y como comenta Merrill en el dvd Smack This!, fue tomado de la canción "God Smack" de Alice in Chains. Aún así, el vocalista de Godsmack, Sully Erna, matizó el origen real del nombre:

"Sucedió en un ensayo cuando nuestro baterista llegó con herpes. Me burle de él durante todo el día debido a que teníamos una sesión fotográfica un día después. A la mañana siguiente, era yo el que tenía herpes labial, así que alguien me dijo: "Es una bofetada [smack] de Dios [God]", de ahí el nombre. Eramos conscientes del título de la canción de Alice in Chains, pero no le dimos más vueltas. Es un buen nombre y tiene significado para nosotros."[1]

El cuarteto –Sully Erna (vocalista), Tony Rambola (guitarrista), Robbie Merrill (bajista) y Tommy Stewart (batería)– lanzó su álbum debut, “All Wound Up” con la compañía independiente EK Records en 1997, firmando un acuerdo posterior con Universal, que re-lanzó el álbum con algunos nuevos cortes en agosto de 1998. Las cadenas de tiendas Wal-Mart y K-Mart rapidamente quitaron el álbum de la venta por su contenido profano, poniendo al grupo en el centro de una creciente controversia. A pesar de, o en respuesta a la controversia, el álbum vendió mas de 5 millones de copias.

En 2002, la banda aportó un corte, “Time Bomb”, a la banda sonora de “Scream 3”. También lanzaron el sencillo “Awake”, cuyo corte instrumental “Vampires” fue nominado a los premios Grammy de 2001 en la categoría de mejor tema instrumental. En 2003, Godsmack obtuvo dos nominaciones a los Grammy por “I Stand Alone”. El grupo lanzó su tercer álbum, “Faceless”, en 2003, producido por David Bottrill e incorporando a un nuevo baterista, Sahnnon Larkin (ex-miembro de Amen).
